ACC Weekly Recap: Virginia and Louisville Split in Unique Tri-Meet

This weekend in ACC swimming action, the University of Virginia hosted Louisville and Princeton in a two-day meet that matched the schedule of a conference championship. The teams competed in Friday morning, Friday evening and Saturday morning sessions.

The Virginia women swept the Cardinals and Tigers, while Louisville’s men were victorious.

Women’s Scores:

Jen Marrkand and Emma Seiberlich led the way for the Virginia women, with Marrkand sweeping the 100 (53.88) and 200 fly (1:57.28) and Seiberlich touching first in the 100 (53.93) and 200 back (1:55.99).

Paige Madden won the 500 for UVA in 4:51.15, and teammate Caitlin Cooper won the 50 free (22.22). Other Cavalier winners included Vivian Tafuto in the 100 breast (1:02.16) and Kylie Towbin in three-meter diving (328.10).

For the Cardinals, Rachael Bradford-Feldman produced three individual wins on the weekend, topping the 200 IM (1:59.03) and 400 IM (4:13.15) before tying with teammate Mariia Astashkina for the win in the 200 breast (2:13.77).

Teammate Mallory Comerford put forward another strong weekend, winning the 200 free in 1:45.20 and the 100 free in 48.37. Comerford also finished second in the 50 free (22.49) and put up relay splits of 21.92 for a 50, 47.65 in the 100 and 1:45.14 in the 200.

Louisville picked up two other individual win, with Molly Fears winning one-meter diving (284.30) and Sophie Cattermole claiming the win in the 1650 free (16:20.09).

In the men’s meet, Marcelo Acosta won the 500 free in 4:23.27 and put up an impressive time of 14:45.42, tops in the country so far this season, in the 1650 free. Teammate Andrej Barna had three wins, in the 50 (20.02), 100 (44.55) and 200 free (1:37.98).

Elsewhere, Nick Albiero swept the 100 (48.00) and 200 back (1:45.66) for Louisville, while Zach Harting won the 100 fly (47.83) and Carlos Claverie won the 100 breast (54.79).

But the difference in Louisville’s 31-point win was diving. Daniel Fecteau swept first-place finishes in the one-meter (311.15) and three-meter (361.85) events, and Virginia had no entrants in the event to counter Louisville.

For Virginia, Zach Fong won the 200 IM (1:49.47) and 200 fly (1:46.05), while Ted Schubert was first in the 400 IM (3:52.15) and Matthew Otto picked up a big victory in the 200 breast (1:59.36).

Texas at NC State

The Texas Longhorns traveled to the Triangle Area for the weekend and split with NC State. Check out a full recap of that meet.

Texas at North Carolina

One day later, the Longhorns headed west to Chapel Hill to face the Tar Heels, and UNC was no match. Texas won the women’s meet 172-125 and the men’s meet 162-137.

Caroline Baldwin was the top performer of the day for the Tar Heels, posting wins in the 50 (22.13) and 100 free (48.24) and also leading off a victorious squad in the 200 medley relay. Caroline Hauder, Emma Cole and Maddie Smith finished off a 1:39.07 win, 0.15 ahead of Texas’ top unit.

But the only other Tar Heel win of the day on the women’s side came in three-meter diving, won by Elissa Dawson (363.75).

In the men’s meet, Alvin Jiang won the 100 back (47.35), Valdas Abaliksta took first in the 100 breast (55.42) and Michael McBryan won the 200 breast (2:00.56). Henry Campbell earned the win in the 500 free (4:27.00), and in diving, his Tar Heel teammates Gregory Duncan won one-meter (384.90) and Sean Burston three-meter (413.85).

Notre Dame & Cincinnati at Indiana

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish made the bus trip 200 miles south to Bloomington Thursday for an all-midwestern tri-meet, and the women took down both their opponents, while the men beat Cincinnati but lost to Indiana.

For the Notre Dame women, Abbie Dolan continued to impress, picking up wins in the 200 free, 100 free and as a part of the Fighting Irish 200 free relay. Dolan’s time of 1:45.94 in the 200 free ranks seventh in the country, and she is the quickest this year who has yet to wear a tech suit.

Dolan also put up a time of 49.30 in the 100 free before leading teammates Rachel Whittmer, Katie Smith and Carly Quast to victory in the relay in 1:32.08. Quast touched out Indiana’s Ali Rockett by just 0.15.

Erin Sheehan tied with Indiana’s Christie Jensen for the win in the women’s 100 fly, touching in 54.27, and Lindsay Stone was victorious in the 1000 free, holding off teammate Molly Treble by six tenths of a second (9:56.17 to 9:56.76).

In the men’s meet, Zach Yeadon swept wins in the 1000 (9:05.21) and 500 free (4:26.24), while teammate Daniel Speers picked up the only other Notre Dame victory, touching in 20.22 in the 50 free.
