ACC Friday Recap: Virginia Sweeps Duke in Home Opener

On Friday in ACC swimming and diving action, Todd DeSorbo’s Virginia Cavaliers welcomed the Duke Blue Devils and came out with a pair of dual meet wins. The UVA women won by a score of 182-115, and the men took down Duke 169-131.

The Cavalier women picked up sweeps of the backstroke events with Emma Seiberlich winning both the 100 (54.91) and 200 (1:58.40), and teammate Mary Claire Tansill won both the 100 (1:02.95) and 200 breast (2:16.87).

Caitlin Cooper provided a blazing 21.55 anchor split on UVA’s 200 medley relay, which also consisted of Abby Richter, Vivian Tafuto and Anna Pang, bringing the team to a win in 1:40.61. Cooper also won the 50 free in 22.50, while Eryn Eddy touched out Cooper to win the 100 free, 50.03 to 50.06.

Morgan Hill won the 200 free for UVA in 1:47.50, and teammate Jen Marrkand won the 200 fly (1:56.63). Hill, Eddy, Pang and Cooper took first in the 200 free relay in 1:30.48.

Duke’s women picked up top honors with from Verity Abel in the 1000 (9:59.84) and 500 free (4:56.72), while Alyssa Marsh won the 100 fly (53.78) and Leah Goldman took first in the 100 IM (56.52).

Virginia’s victorious men’s team had three double winners on the day, with Brendan Casey taking the 1000 (9:17.13) and 500 free (4:30.51), while Bryce Keblish won the 100 fly (48.21) and 100 IM (50.47).

UVA freshmen Matthew Otto and Kiefer Barnum tied for the win in the 100 breast, touching in 55.61, and Otto later added a win in the 200 breast (1:59.98). The only other individual winner for the Cavaliers was Zach Fong in the 200 fly (1:48.02).

Luke Georgiadis, Fong, Ryan Baker and Joe Clark rounded out the meet with a win in the 200 free relay (1:22.01).

Duke’s Yusuke Legard won both the 200 (1:38.36) and 100 free (44.27), and Max St. George swept the 100 (47.76) and 200 back (1:46.65). Miles Williams added a win in the 50 free (20.43) for the Blue Devils.

Duke’s St. George, Sean Tate, Legard and Williams won the men’s 200 medley relay in 1:28.64.

In diving, Duke’s Mary Ellen Targonski won the women’s one-meter (284.40), while Virginia’s Kylie Towbin took first on the women’s three-meter board (305.48). Duke swept the two men’s diving wins, with Evan Moretti winning one-meter (360.75) and Nathaniel Hernandez three-meter (371.70).

Tennessee at Louisville

In a Thursday dual meet, the Louisville women and men were swept at home by the Volunteers, who made the four-hour drive north from Knoxville. The Cardinal women were edged out by the Volunteers, 156 to 144, while Tennessee’s men beat Louisville’s 170-130.

As usual, the Louisville women were paced by star freestyler Mallory Comerford. Comerford posted a quick 1:45.60 to win the 200 free against the Vols, and she also added a win in the 100 free (48.56). Arina Openysheva, Lainey Visscher, Comerford and Casey Fanz won the 400 free relay in 3:19.22.

Freshman breaststroker Mariia Astashkina swept the breaststroke events, tying with teammate Morgan Friesen in the 100 breast in 1:02.55 before winning the 200-yard event in 2:13.72. Louisville’s only other women’s win came from freshman Openysheva, who touched in 22.97 in the 50 free.

For the Cardinal men, Andrej Barna won the 50 (20.15) and 100 free (44.72), while Marcelo Acosta won the 1000 free (9:05.20), Zach Harting took first in the 200 fly (1:46.41), and Nick Albiero won the 200 back (1:45.38).

Carlos Claverie finished well behind Tennessee’s Peter Stevens in the 100 breast (53.93 to 54.83), but the senior rebounded to win the 200 breast in 1:58.60.

Albiero, Barna, Nikkos Sofianidis and Harting ended the meet with a win in the 400 free relay, touching in 2:57.79.

NC State at Stanford (women only)

The previously undefeated NC State Wolfpack were no match for the Stanford Cardinal Friday afternoon in Palo Alto, Calif., falling by a score of 189 to 104.

The only event win on the afternoon came from sprinter Ky-Lee Perry, who took first in the 50 free in 22.57. Perry was also second in the 100 free, but she could not hold off Katie Ledecky and finished two tenths behind, 49.25 to 49.45.

Hannah Moore could not keep pace with Ledecky in the 1000 free, finishing second in 9:18.19, and she was just edged out by Katie Drabot for the win in the 500 free, 4:43.20 to 4:43.54. The only other Wolfpack runner-up finish on the day came from Krista Duffield in the 100 fly (54.25).

Pitt, Seton Hall, Georgetown & Villanova at Rutgers

Pitt leads in all of its dual meet competitions after day one of two at the five-team Rutgers-hosted meet. On day one, Panther swimmers and divers took first in 16 events, including all four relays.

The only double winner on the day was Valerie Daigneault, who won the 100 back (55.16) and 200 IM (2:02.69). Teammate Rachel Brown won the 50 free (23.27), Amanda Richey won the 1000 free (9:54.66), and Lina Rathsack was first in the 100 breast (1:03.37).

Individual event winners for the Pitt men included Cannon Ellis in the 50 free (20.95), Armin Remenyi in the 1000 free (9:18.96), Bence Szucsik in the 100 back (50.48), John Fauteux in the 100 breast (56.30), Eben Vorster in the 200 fly (1:48.52), Samy Helmbacher in the 200 IM (1:48.52) and Joseph Ference in one-meter diving (327.90).

Princeton & Nova Southeastern at Miami

The Miami women took down Nova Southeastern at home but could not keep pace with the Princeton Tigers, falling by a score of 198.5-100.5.

For the Hurricanes, Carmen San Nicolas won the 200 free (1:52.06) and tied with Princeton’s Maddy Veith for first in the 100 free (52.37). The only other Miami winner was Marcela Maric, who swept one-meter (285.68) and three-meter (333.23) diving.
