Abbey Weitzeil blasted the American record in the women’s 50-yard free during her individual event at the 2016 American Short Course Championships in Austin.

She scorched finals with a 21.12 for the win tonight, breaking Lara Jackson’s American record of 21.27 set as a relay leadoff for Arizona during the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Championships.

Weizeil initially missed the American record by the slimmest of margins during the 200-yard free relay. She clocked a 21.28 leadoff to just miss.

This morning during prelims, Weitzeil threw down a swift time of 21.42.

That time broke her personal best of 21.49 set as a leadoff for Canyons at the 2014 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals, and had moved her up to fifth all time ahead of the legendary Natalie Coughlin (21.46 in 2007).

Weitzeil is on fire this weekend in Austin.  She already moved to sixth in the world in the 50-meter free with a 24.72 and seventh in the world in the 100-meter free with a 54.00 during the LCM portion of the meet.

hen Jackson swam that 21.27 leading off the Mildcats’ 200 fre relay @ Texas A&M seven years ago she had the advantage of the now-banned fullbody suit.

Her reaction time was more than .30 quicker than Weitzei’s (0.35 vs. 0.69) so if Abbey can get off the blocks a tad quicker she should go faster than Caeleb Dressel’s 18.23 men’s record (in my — and her– dreams!)

.30 reaction time? That seems wrong, I thought Vald Morozov had the fastest reaction time ever with a .42

Why isn’t she swimming in college? Seems she’d have a better training atmosphere and swimmers to train with?
