2022 Pac-12 Men’s Championships Day 2 Prelims: Cal’s Bjorn Seeliger Throws Down 18.86 in 50 Free

The 2022 Pac-12 Men’s Swimming Championships continued from Federal Way, Washington with the Day 2 prelims.

The 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle will take place this session.

Stanford won the opening 200 medley relay as well to built its lead but Arizona State stole the show with a Pac-12 meet record in the 800 free relay but the Cardinal still lead the meet.

Pac-12 Men’s 500 Freestyle

Stanford sophomore Preston Forst dropped nearly a half second from his seed time to take the top spot in the 500 freestyle for tonight’s finals.

He was a full second ahead of the field.

Arizona fifth-year Brooks Fail took the second seed in 4:14.83), followed by USC senior Victor Johansson (4:15.34).

Stanford ended up with three in the finals as junior Andrew Matejka took the fourth seed (4:15.39) and senior Grant Shoults was fifth (4:15.51).

Arizona State junior Andrew Gray took the sixth spot (4:15.64), dropping four seconds from his seed time to finish ahead of Cal senior Sean Grieshop (4:15.73), who was a second slower than his seed time, meaning he could have more left in the tank for finals.

Pac-12 Men’s 200 IM

Arizona State took the top two seeds in the 200 IM heading into finals. Leon Marchand took the top seed in 1:40.90 nearly a full second ahead of senior teammate Grant House (1:41.74).

Stanford freshman Ron Polonsky took the third seed in 1:41.95, ahead of a Cal trio.

Cal senior Hugo Gonzalez took the fourth seed in 1:42.04, ahead of sophomore teammate Destin Lasco (1:42.07) and junior Jason Louser (1:42.19).

Stanford also ended up with three in the finals as Jonny Affeld took the seventh spot (1:42.52) and Rick Mihm took the eighth spot (1:43.13).

Pac-12 Men’s 50 Free

Cal sophomore Bjorn Seeliger dropped 16 hundredths of a second from his seed time to claim the top seed in the 50 freestyle in 18.86 seconds. It is six hundreths off the meet record.

Stanford freshman Andrei Minakov took the second spot in 19.24, followed by Arizona State’s Jack Dolan (19.33) and Cody Bybee (19.37).

Arizona’s Marin Ercegovic took the fifth seed in 19.42, ahead of USC’s Artem Selin (19.45), Cal’s Jack Alexy (19.47) and Arizona’s Tai Combs (19.51).
