For the first time in four events at the NCAA Men’s Championships Saturday morning, a swimmer from a school other than the University of California will enter finals as the top seed. This time, it’s Nicolas Albiero of Louisville, who has the top seed in his signature event, but he’ll have a Golden Bear in hot pursuit.

NCAA Men’s Championships: 200 Butterfly

Everyone is chasing the history set by a Texas swimmer. At the 2017 meet, Jack Conger set the NCAA, meet, American and U.S. Open records in the event, the Longhorn going 1:37.35.

Albeiro, fresh off a Friday double in which he finished second in the 100 fly and fifth in the 100 backstroke, set the pace in prelims. He clocked in at 1:39.61, nearly a second off the Greensboro Aquatic Center record that he set in 2020 (1:38.65).

Just five one-hundredths back is Cal’s Trenton Julian, the bronze medalist in the 200 freestyle just missing out on being the fourth Golden Bear of the morning to garner a top seed.

In the title race between Cal and Texas, it’s a one-on-one situation. Both teams have a B finalist. Julian and Sam Pomajevich of Texas, the fifth seed, will battle it out in the A final.

The third seed goes to Virginia Tech’s Antani Ivanov, who went 1:40.07. Fourth is Georgia’s Luca Urlando (with teammate Camden Murphy eighth), and Brendan Burns of Indiana earned the sixth seed.
