The 2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships continued with the final preliminary session of the meet on Saturday.
Saturday’s prelim events are the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and platform diving. The relays are all timed finals and will take place during the finals session. The 1,650 will also be a timed final and heats will start in the afternoon leading into the final.
Virginia leads the meet after winning five events, while NC State has won four and is in second place.
NCAA Championships: Women’s 100 Free
Stanford’s Simone Manuel has the best time in history at 45.56, set when she won in 2017. Tennessee’s Erika Brown is next at 45.83, followed by Louisville’s Mallory Comerford (46.20), Arkansas’ Anna Hopkin (46.20) and Abbey Weitzeil (46.29). Michigan’s Maggie MacNeil comes in with the seventh-fastest time in history at 46.57, while Virginia’s Kate Douglass is 13th at 46.83. Comerford won the event in 2019 with Manuel winning three of the previous four with Georgia’s Olivia Smoliga winning in 2016. … Georgia’s Kara Lynn Joyce and Stanford’s Jenny Thompson each swept the event all four years. Stanford has the all-time lead with 10, while Georgia has eight.
Round three of the Maggie MacNeil-Kate Douglass showdown looks to be a good one, though Isabel Ivey might have something to day about it. MacNeil won the 100 butterfly and Douglass won the 50 free.
Virginia sophomore Kate Douglass took the top seed in 46.54. Cal’s Isabel Ivey is the second seed in 47.30, just ahead of Michigan junior Maggie MacNeil (47.34).
Alabama, meanwhile, has three in the finals with sophomore Cora Dupre and junior Morgan Scott tying for the fourth seed at 47.88 and junior Kalia Antoniou took the seventh seed at 47.96.
NC State junior Kyle Alons took the sixth seed in 47.89 and Texas A&M freshman Chloe Stepanek rounded out the top eight.
