The 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship continued Thursday with the first preliminary session of the meet from Greensboro, North Carolina.
The events scheduled are the 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle.
Texas took an early lead in the meet by winning the 800 freestyle relay on the first night and looks to build on it on Day 2.

NCAA Championships: 500 Free
Florida’s Kieran Smith has the all-time fastest swim in the event at 4:06.21, followed by Georgia’s Jake Magahey (4:06.71). Texas’ Drew Kibler has the fifth-fastest time in 4:08.25. The Longhorns have won this event since 2015 with Clark Smith winning in 2015 and 2017 and Townley Haas winning in 2016, 2018 and 2019. Those are the wins for Texas. USC has 14 titles in the event with Arizona and Michigan each tallying eight. Notre Dame’s Zachary Yeadon held the pool record at 4:10.30.
Georgia’s Jake Magahey broke the Greensboro pool record to take the top seed in what looks to be an incredible packed 500 free final. Magahey touched the wall in 4:09.36 to hold off the field.
Arizona senior Brooks Fail was also under the pool record, originally set by Notre Dame’s Zachary Yeadon (4:10.30) in 2020. Fail touched in 4:09.41 to take the second seed.
American record-holder Kieran Smith, a junior from Florida, took the third seed in 4:11.03, ahead of Cal senior Sean Grieshop (4:11.12) and Texas junior Drew Kibler (4:11.52).
Cal senior Trenton Julian took the sixth seed in 4:11.60, followed by NC State sophomore Ross Dant (4:12.34) and Florida junior Bobby Finke (4:12.37).
It is set up to be a pretty exciting final packed with experienced swimmers who all have a shot to win. It should be a fun race to watch tonight.
