The 2021 USA Swimming East Speedo Winter Junior Championships continued on Thursday morning from the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
The first prelims session of the meet will consist of the men’s and women’s 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle.
Thomas Heilman, who set six National Age Group records at the 13-14 level at the U.S. Open, took the top seed in the 50 free and was just off another NAG record.
Speedo Winter Junior Championships: Women’s 500 Free
Michaela Mattes of the Sarasota Sharks claimed the top seed in the first event of the morning. The 16-year-old touched the wall first in the 500 free to take the top spot heading into finals at 4:43.98.
It was a strong prelims swim, about six seconds off the junior national record (4:37.10, Regan Smith).
Carmel Swim Club’s Lynsey Bowen took the second seed in 4:45.35, followed by Commonwealth’s Natalie Mannion (4:46.07), and East Carolina’s Emma Hastings (4:47.10).

Speedo Winter Junior Championships: Men’s 500 Free
SwimMAC’s Logan Zucker dropped a second from his seed time to take the top spot in the men’s 500 free. The 18-year-old touched the wall in 4:21.40 to snag the first seed in finals.
Sarasota Sharks’ Liam Custer took the second seed in 4:22.10, followed by SwimAtlanta’s Sebastian Sergile (4:23.30).
The meet record is 4:12.72 set by Jake Magahey in 2019. It would take a huge time drop for anyone in this field to reach the mark.

Speedo Winter Junior Championships: Women’s 200 IM
Carmel’s Devon Kitchel was first to the wall in the women’s 200 IM. The 17-year-old was a little slower than her seed time (1:57.69) in claiming the first seed at 1:58.40. That should leave her plenty in the tank for finals where she will chase a junior championship.
The meet record is 1:53.69 set by Alex Walsh in 2018.
Greater Somerset’s Emily Thompson was about a second behind, taking the seconds seed in 1:59.30.
Chattachoochee’s Elizabeth Tilt took the third seed in 1:59.45.

Speedo Winter Junior Championships: Men’s 200 IM
SwimMAC’s Baylor Nelson was a second ahead of the field to claim the top seed in the men’s 200 IM. Nelson, 18, touched the wall in 1:44.77 to earn the top seed in finals.
He is nearly two seconds behind the meet record of 1:42.43 set by Carson Foster in 2019.
Spartan Aquatic’s Kamal Muhammad, 18, took the second seeding 1:45.60, followed by YMCA of Cumberland’s Daniel Diehl (1:46.69).
Dynamo’s Owen McDonald (1:46.72), Zionsville’s Will Modglin (1:46.78) and Flood Aquatic’s Josh Zuchowski (1:46.92) were also all sub-1:47, which should lead to a fast and close final.

The women’s 50 free should be an extremely close final based on how the prelims finished.
Anna Moesch, 16, took the top seed in 22.52, just ahead of Carmel 15-year-old Alex Shackell (22.54) and Mason 17-year-old Katherine Helms (22.62).
Annam Olaewere was just behind at 22.69, followed by Upper Main Line’s Alexa Fulton (22.71), Eagle’s Erika Pelaez (22.72) and Shock Wave’s Julia Dennis (22.75).
There will be a swim-off for eighth place with Farmington Valley’s Mackenzie Headley and Bolles’ Fresh Sathiankowisan (22.83). Sathiankowisan won the swim-off in 22.68.

Cavalier Aquatic’s Thomas Heilman continued his extremely impressive month. He took the top seed in the 50 are at 19.96. The time was just two tenths off of the 13-14 National Age Group record of Michael Andrew (19.76) set in 2014.
Heilman, 14, broke six NAG records at the U.S.Open earlier in the month. He was the only swimmer under 20 seconds in prelims of the 50 free.
Bolles’ Drew Salls, 17, took the second seed in 20.07, follows by Lucca Battaglini (2011), Tate Bacon (20.22) and Lynchburg’s Brendan Whitfield (20.23).
