The 2020 Pac-12 Men’s Championships kicked off with a short session that involved just two relays.
The 800 free relay and 400 medley relay comprised the session. Cal is the defending champion and got off to a strong start with an win in the 800 free relay, but disqualified the 400 medley relay, as did Arizona State. With diving having happened last week, that leaves USC in first place ahead of Stanford and Cal is stunningly in sixth heading into Day 2.
Not that it is any time to panic for Cal fans. Their depth can make up for the misstep.

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 800 Free Relay
Cal started strong with a win in the 800 free relay. Zheng Quah, Bryce Mefford, Daniel Carr and Trenton Julian won the event in 6:11.47.
Julian anchored with a 1:32.24 split.
Arizona State’s Jack Dolan, Carter Swift, Liam Bresette and Cody Bybee finished second in 6:12.17.
Arizona’s Daniel Namir, Jorge Iga, Hunter Ingram and Brooks Fail finished third in 6:14.80.
Stanford’s Will Macmillan, Jack LeVant, James Murphy and Grant Shoults took fourth in 6:15.79.

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 400 Medley Relay
The 400 medley relay took a turn as Cal and Arizona State both disqualified with early take-offs from the third swimmer in both spots.
Cal finished the race three seconds ahead of the field and would have been the champion if not for the DQ. Arizona State’s time would have placed them third.
Instead, Stanford’s Benjamin Ho, Hanke Poppe, Alex Liang and Mason Gonzalez won in 3:06.81.
Utah’s David Fridlander, Andrew Britton and Liam O’Haimhirgin took second in 3:07.49.
Arizona’s Thomas Anderson, Ryan Foote, Noah Reid and Marin Ercegovic took third in 3:08.04.
