2019 Women’s Pac-12 Championship Day 4: Stanford Three-Peats

Stanford took a big lead into the final day of the 2019 Women’s Pac-12 Championship and cruised to a third consecutive conference championship on Saturday in Federal Way, Washington.

The Cardinal scored 1775 points to win by more than 400 points. Cal was second with 1352 and USC was third with 1183.5.

Meanwhile the Cal 400 free relay set an NCAA record. to close the meet.

The 200 fly will be a race to watch as the new NCAA record holder of the 100 fly, Louise Hansson of USC, currently holds the top seed.

Meanwhile Cal teammates Amy Bilquist and Abbey Weitzeil went head-to-head in the 100 free and Stanford teammates Taylor Ruck and Ella Eastin did the same in the 200 back.

Stanford senior Leah Stevens used a late surge to overtake Arizona State’s Cierra Runge and win the Pac-12 title in the mile.

Smith finished in 15:51.26, an NCAA automatic qualifying time and was consistently in the 29s for the first half of her race, then the 28s in the second half. Runge finished in 15:51.72, another “A” cut.

Stanford freshman Morgan Tankersley took third in 1:59.98, an NCAA “B” cut, followed by Arizona State sophomore Emma Nordin (16:00.44), Arizona’s Hannah Cox (16:01.08), Stanford junior Megan Byrnes (16:05.50), Arizona junior Kirsten Jacobsen (16:09.89) and UCLA senior Sandra Soe (16:12.90).

Stanford’s Ella Eastin claimed the final individual Pac-12 title of her career by winning the 200 back on Saturday. She finished in 1:48.53 to hold doff teammate Taylor Ruck (1:48.67).

Both were NCAA “A” cuts.

The Cardinal went 1-2-3-4-7 in the event and the rest of the finalists achieved “B” cuts. Freshman Lucie Nordmann took third (1:51.34) and junior Erin Voss was fourth (1:51.43).

Junior Allie Szekely took seventh (1:54.51) behind Cal junior Keaton Blovad (1:51.73) and UCLA freshman Mara Newman (1:53.73). Cal freshman Alicia Wilson took eighth (1:55.11).

Following a 1-2-3-4 Stanford performance, Cal went 1-2-3 in the 100 free and got a Pac-12 meet record to top it off.

Junior Abbey Weitzeil dropped more than a second from her prelims time to win the event in 46.35, breaking the championship meet record set by Simone Manuel (46.36) in 2017.

Senior teammate Amy Bilquist finished second in 47.01, also an NCAA “A” cut, while sophomore teammate Robin Neumann took third in 47.78, a “B” cut.

The rest of the finalists earned “B: cuts as USC freshman Laticia Transom took fourth (48.14), Stanford sophomore Lauren Pitzer was fifth (48.25), followed by USC sophomores Marta Ciesla (48.25) and Jemma Schlicht (48.56) as well as UCLA junior Kenisha Liu (48.65).

Stanford sophomore Grace Zhao won the 200 breast in 2:07.07, holding off USC senior Riley Scott (2:07.78). Both times were NCAA “B” cuts.

Arizona State junior Silja Kansakoski, who won the 100 breast, took third, finishing in 2:08.01.

A pair of Stanford freshmen followed as Allie Raab finished fourth (2:08.11) and Zoe Bartel was fifth (2:08.93).

USC junior Kirsten Vose finished sixth (2:09.17), followed by Washington State sophomore Mackenzie Duarte (2:11.57) and USC freshman Isa Odgers (2:11.62).

USC junior Louise Hansson made it 3-for-3 at the Pac-12 Championships, winning the 200 fly by nearly a seconds.

Hanson won the race in 1:50.68, an NCAA “A” cut. Stanford junior Katie Drabot was second in 1:51.42, also an “A” cut.

Hansson’s teammate Maddie Wright finished third in 1:53.31, also garnering an “A” cut.

Stanford sophomore Brooke Forde finished fourth in 1:54.67 as the rest of the finalists earned “B” cuts.

Cal sophomore Sarah Darcel finished fifth (1:55.55), followed by Arizona senior Mackenzie Rumrill (1:55.63), Cal freshman Cassidy Bayer (1:56.12) and USC junior Catherine Sanchez (1:56.53).

Platform diving

Stanford sophomore Mia Paulsen won the platform diving with 256.30 points. She held off USC’s Naomi Gowlett, who finished second with 252.30, and Stanford teammate Darla Lenz, who took third (242.20).

Arizona State junior Ashley McCool took fourth (233.45), followed by Arizona sophomore Delaney Schnell (231.80), UCLA senior Eloise Belanger (231.70), Stanfor’d Carolina Schulti (204.95) and USC’s Carly Souza (203.00).

400 Free Relay

The Cal women surged to an NCAA record to win the 400 free relay at the 2019 Women’s Pac-12 Championships to close the meet on Saturday night in Federal Way, Washington.

The Bears clocked a 3:07.41, beating the previous mark set by Stanford at the 2017 NCAA championships (2:07.61).

Sophomore Robin Neumann, of the Netherlands, started the race off with a 48.17 split. Senior Katie McLaughlin followed with a 46.55. The last two legs were completely crushed as Amy Bilquist clocked a 46.30 before Abbey Weitzeil went a 46.39.

Stanford’s Taylor Ruck, Lauren Pitzer, Anya Goeders and Ella Eastin finished second in 3:10.43, followed by USC’s Louise Hansson, Jemma Schlicht, Laticia Transom and Marta Ciesla (3:13.10).
