2019 Women’s Pac-12 Championship Day 2: Weitzeil, Eastin, Hansson Claim Titles

Cal leads the 2019 Women’s Pac-12 Championship by 16 points heading into day two, followed closely by Stanford and USC.

The second day opens with the 500 free, then moves to the 200 IM and 50 free before diving. Some of the sport’s biggest stars took center stage in these races as Ella Eastin, Louise Hansson and Abbey Weitzeil earned conference titles. Weitzeil set an Pac-12 record to win the 50 free.

After two days, Stanford leads the meet with 583.5 points. Cal is second with 455.5, followed by Arizona State (349), USC (323), Arizona (320), UCLA (291), Utah (143), Washington State (135) and Oregon State (90).

Stanford Ella Eastin swam one of her so-called off events on Thursday. She responded by surging to the Pac-12 title in the 500 freestyle.

Eastin dropped four seconds from her prelim time to win in 4:32.89.

Teammate Lauren Pitzer finished second in 4:34.30, holding off Arizona State’s Cierra Runge (4:35.13), as the Stanford distance dominance continued. Freshman Morgan Takersley was fourth (3:47) and junior Erin Voss was sixth (4:38.29).

Senior Leah Stevens (4:38.40), junior Megan Byrnes (4:39.16) and sophomore Katie Glavinovich (4:40.80) went 9-10-12 in the B final as they continue their taper toward the NCAA Championships.

Arizona State’s Emma Nordin took fifth (4:37.68). Cal sophomore Robin Neumann was seventh (4:39.34) and Arizona’s Kirsten Jacobsen took eighth (4:40.91).

200 IM

USC’s Louise Hansson held on to her top seed and cruised to victory in the 200 IM.

The junior finished in 1:52.50, nearly two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Cal freshman Izzy Ivey finished second in 1:54.31, followed by teammate Sarah Darcel (1:54.91).

Stanford’s Brooke Forde finished fourth (155.11), followed by Cal’s Keaton Blovad (1:55.62) and Stanford freshman Allie Raab (1:55.97).

USC’s Kirsten Vose took seventh (1:57.00) with Stanford’s Katie Drabot taking eighth (1:57.29).

USC’s Tatum Wade won the B final with a 1:55.63.

50 Free

Cal went 1-2 in the 50 free in a result that seemed likely after prelims.

Abbey Weitzeil won the race in 21.16, while Amy Bilquist finished second in 21.64.

UCLA freshman Claire Grover took third in 21.98 ahead of USC sophomore Marta Ciesla (22.01).

Cal’s Maddie Murphy was fifth (22.08), followed by Arizona’s Katrina Konopka (22.24) and Stanford freshman Taylor Ruck (22.24), who tied for sixth. Arizona State’s Fanny Teijonsalo was eighth (22.29).

1-Meter Diving

UCLA senior Maria Polyakova won 1-meter diving, finishing with 335.70 points.

Arizona sophomore Delaney Schnell finished second (326.00), followed by Stanford’s Carolina Schultz (313.10).

UCLA senior Eloise Belanger took forth (306.75), followed by Stanford’s Darla Lenz (278.60), Cal’s Phoebe Lamay (276.50), Stanford’s Haley Farnsworth (258.30) and Arizona State’s Ashley McCool (240.95).

 

200 Free Relay

The Cal sprinters surged to the Pac-12 title in the 200 free relay to close Thursday’s session.

Abbey Weitzeil, Maddie Murphy, Katie McLaughlin and Amy Bilquist won the race in 1:26.00

Stanford’s Amalie Fackenthal, Taylor Ruck, Lauren Pitzer and Anya Goeders took second in 1:27.42.

USC’s Marta Ciesla, Latricia Transom, Jemma Schlicht and Tatum Wade took third in 1:27.97.

UCLA took fourth in 1:28.88, followed by Arizona (1:28.96), Arizona State (1:29.41) and Utah (1:31.28).
