The first night of the 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series in Richmond, Virginia only had two events but there was still plenty of noise made in those two events. Katie Ledecky won the 800 free to open up the meet but it was Leah Smith in second place that turned some heads. Smith moved up to third in the world rankings for 2019 and improved on her best time in the event.
Zane Grothe won the men’s 800 free in a 7:55.78, just off his Des Moines time of 7:54. Grothe was second in the TYR Pro Swim Series standings in 2018 behind Chase Kalisz.
