2019 TYR Pro Swim Series Des Moines: Flickinger Rocks Triple on Friday Morning

Friday morning’s preliminary session of the 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series will feature the heats of the 200 free, 50 breast, 50 fly, 200 back and 400 IM. Michael Andrew and Hali Flickinger have been the top names at the meet thus far as Flickinger lowered her season best in the 200 fly on Thursday night in Des Moines. Andrew won the 100 breast and 50 back mere minutes apart.

Swimming fans in attendance will get a chance to see superstars Allison SchmittBlake PieroniCaeleb DresselKelsi DahliaKathleen Baker and Jacob Pebley in attendance on Friday morning in Iowa.

Women’s 200 Free

23-year-old Leah Smith took the top spot in the 200 free heats on Friday morning at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Des Moines with a 1:59.27 morning swim. It was not a very quick heats session as Smith was one of three swimmers under two minutes in the prelims. Georgia post-grads Melanie Margalis (1:59.67) and Hali Flickinger (1:59.72) were the other two swimmers under 2:00.

There is a bit of an international feel to the meet here in Des Moines as Larissa Oliveira (2:00.05), Kathryn Greenslade (2:00.76) and Mary-Sophie Harvey (2:01.46) all qualified for the final. Oliveira represents Brazil internationally, Greenslade swims for Great Britain, and Harvey swims for Canada.

American World Championship team members Allison Schmitt (2:00.21) and Gabby DeLoof (2:01.28) also qualified for the final.

Men’s 200 Free

Brazil’s Breno Correia (1:48.20) put up the top time in the 200 free heats on Friday morning at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Des Moines. Correia is ahead of a solid field as Queens freshman Alex Kunert is the second seed at 1:48.71. Kunert will be swimming at Division II NCAAs next week for Queens as he is entered in the 200 free, 1000, 200 fly and 100 free.

There will be four World Championship team members for Team USA in this heat with Blake Pieroni (1:48.77), Jack Conger (1:49.06), Zane Grothe (1:49.91) and Caeleb Dressel (1:50.17) advancing to the finals. All four of those swimmers are swimming in their first Pro Swim Series of the year.

Brazilian duo Luiz Melo (1:49.64) and Leonardo Coelho Santos (1:50.29) also qualified for the final.

Women’s 50 Breast

Great Britain’s Imogen Clark was the only swimmer under 31 seconds in the heats of the 50 breaststroke on Friday morning at the TYR Pro Swim Series with a 30.81. She is ahead of Brazil’s Jhennifer Conceicao (31.14) and Mission Viejo’s Annie Lazor (31.59). Lazor has been on a roll this year, lowering her best times in the Olympic distances after she won gold at Short Course Worlds in December.

Rachel Bernhardt (31.94), Erin Szara (31.96), Bethany Galat (32.05), Melissa Rodriguez (32.57) and Liz Roberts (32.63) also qualified for the final.

Men’s 50 Breast

Nearly sixty seconds after Michael Andrew broke the Pro Swim Series record in the 50 breast on Friday morning in Des Moines, 33-year-old Felipe Lima broke the record in the next heat with a 26.97. Andrew previously broke the record with a 27.17, lowering Nic Fink’s 27.34 from Knoxville earlier this year.

Lima is now ranked second in the world rankings for 2019 as world record holder Adam Peaty is on top at 26.74. Lima is the only other swimmer under 27 seconds as Andrew has moved up to fourth behind Italian Nicolo Martinenghi.

Former record holder Nic Fink is sitting in third this morning with a 27.57 as he is just ahead of fellow Bulldog Andrew Wilson (27.63).

A couple SEC grads are in fifth and sixth as Peter Stevens (27.94) and Caeleb Dressel (28.00) are in the final.

Great Britain’s James Wilby (28.06) and Mexico’s Miguel De Lara Ojeda (28.08) also qualified for the final.

Women’s 50 Fly

A trio of 24-year-olds will share the middle of the pool tonight in Des Moines with Farida Osman (26.17) on top of the 50 fly heats on Friday morning. Osman is followed by Kelsi Dahlia (26.28) of Cardinal Aquatics and Kendyl Stewart (26.52) of Team Elite.

Osman and Dahlia finished third and fourth in the 50 fly at the 2017 World Championships as Osman picked up Egypt’s first swimming medal at the FINA World Championships.

A couple veterans follow the top three in 28-year-old Amanda Kendall (26.58) and 25-year-old Natalie Hinds (26.74) in fourth and fifth.

Haley Black (26.77), Aliena Schmidtke (27.40) and Tain Bruce (27.52) also qualified for the final.

Men’s 50 Fly

Michael Andrew has continued to crank out his impressive doubles at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Des Moines as he is on top of the 50 fly heats with a 23.51. Andrew is on top of a veteran field as the closest person to his age is Caeleb Dressel at 22.

Dressel, swimming in his third event of the day, is the fifth seed at 24.22. Queens senior Marius Kusch (23.77) is the second seed behind Andrew as he is gearing up for Division II NCAAs next week.

Ryan Held (23.85), swimming in his first meet after moving from NC State to Indiana, is seeded third. Luis Martinez (23.98), Peter Holoda (24.27), Marcelo Chierighini (24.31) and Justin Lynch (24.37) also qualified for the final.

Kathleen Baker cruised to the top seed in the 200 back on Friday morning at the TYR Pro Swim Series with a 2:10.62 as she is just ahead of Hali Flickinger (2:11.19). Baker took the win in the 50 back last night as she is in her first year of professional swimming for Speedo and Team Elite.

Northwestern’s Calypso Sheridan (2:12.50) is the third seed ahead of Kennedy Goss (2:14.18) and Olivia Smoliga (2:14.44) for the final tonight.

Ugne Mazutaityte (2:14.50), Chloe Golding (2:14.510 and Bridgette Alexander (2:14.66) also qualified for the final.

Men’s 200 Back

Ryosuke Irie is still on the top of his game in the 200 back as he is the top seed ahead of fellow Team Elite member Jacob Pebley. Irie is on top at 2:01.37 as Grigory Tarasevich (2:01.57) is second and Pebley (2:01.64) is third.

Every single swimmer in the field is over the age of 20 except for Cascade’s Cole Pratt, who is 16, and is the sixth seed at 2:04.44. Christopher Reid (2:02.28), Nikita Tretyakov (2:03.97), Ariel Molina (2:05.25) and Joonas Koski (2:05.28) also qualified for the final.

Women’s 400 IM

Hali Flickinger seems to not get tired. Swimming in her third event of the day, qualified fastest in the 400 IM heats on Friday morning at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Des Moines. Flickinger is seeded first at 4:45.96 as she swam the 200 free and 200 back earlier in the session.

Flickinger is ahead of Canada’s Mary-Sophie Harvey (4:47.02) and Great Britain’s Abbie Wood (4:47.78). Northwestern’s Calypso Sheridan (4:49.31), also swimming in her second event of the day, qualified fourth. Sheridan swam the 200 back earlier in the session.

Bethany Galat (4:49.71), Megan Kingsley (4:51.90), Amy Bell (4:54.57) and Yara Hierath (4:55.20) also qualified for the final.

Men’s 400 IM

Jay Litherland is on top of the 400 IM prelims on Friday morning in Des Moines as he swam a 4:25.00 to cruise to lane four in tonight’s final. Litherland is ahead of two Brits in Joe Litchfield (4:25.78), who is the younger brother of World Championship finalist Max Litchfield, and Mark Szaranek (4:26.23) of Gator Swim Club.

Fellow Dynamo Swim Club and Georgia teammate Gunnar Bentz is sixth for the final as he swam a 4:27.47 in the heats.

Brandonn Almeida (4:27.35), who used to swim at South Carolina, is seeded fourth at 4:27.35. Brian Palaschuk (4:27.45), Tom Peribonio (4:27.78) and Zachary Tan (4:29.28) have also qualified for the final.
