2019 TYR Pro Swim Series Clovis: Jack LeVant Scratches, 30-Year-Old Brandon Fischer Swims Best Time on Thursday Morning

The first full morning of the 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series from Clovis featured the heats of the 200 free, 100 breast, 50 back, 100 fly and 400 IM. There were not a lot of big names at the meet in Clovis, California but Leah SmithMallory ComerfordTownley HaasKelsi Dahlia and Gianluca Urlando were in attendance this morning.

Women’s 200 Free

Leah Smith and Mallory Comerford, who will both represent Team USA at the World Championships later this summer, have the top two seeds in the 200 free on Thursday morning at the 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series in Clovis. Smith is first at 1:58.10 while Comerford is second at 1:58.65. Comerford was right at her season best time of 1:58.02 from when she swam in Brazil in April.

Catie DeLoof, who just made the move from Michigan to San Diego, is the third seed at 2:00.09. DeLoof swam for the University of Michigan and is now training at Team Elite, presumably to be closer to her older sister Ali DeLoof.

Canada has a couple swimmers in the final with Emily Overholt (2:00.15) and Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson (2:01.56) in fourth and seventh. Clovis’ own Claire Tuggle is the fifth seed in her home pool at 2:01.41.

Evie Pfeifer (2:01.50) and Remedy Rule (2:01.73) also qualified for the A-Final.

Men’s 200 Free

Trey Freeman, who just finished his freshman year at the University of Florida, posted the quickest time in the morning at 1:48.00 in the heats of the 200 free.  Freeman is ahead by over a second heading into finals on Thursday at the 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series in Clovis. Freeman is ahead of a good field with Canada’s Markus Thormeyer (1:49.33) sitting in second and USA’s Townley Haas (1:49.83) in third.

Freeman will represent Team USA at the World University Games in a couple weeks.

Dylan Carter, who represents Trinidad & Tobago internationally, is the fourth seed at 1:50.01, just ahead of fellow former USC Trojan Cristian Quintero (1:50.06).

This field will have two of the last three NCAA title winners in the 200 free with Quintero (2015) and Haas (2016-2018) in attendance.

Gianluca Urlando (1:50.23), Jorge Iga (1:50.96) and Jeremy Bagshaw (1:51.75) also qualified for the final.

Jack LeVant scratched out of the morning after coming in with the second fastest time. He has been dealing with health issues this year which caused him to scratch NCAAs.

Women’s 100 Breast

Alia Atkinson is the top seed in the 100 breast on Thursday morning at the 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series in Clovis with a 1:09.14. She is just ahead of Mexico’s Melissa Rodriguez (1:09.23) and 2012 Olympic finalist and fellow former Texas A&M Aggie Breeja Larson (1:09.24).

Texas A&M swimming has a solid contention in the final with Atkinson, Larson, Sydney Pickrem (1:09.61) and Esther Gonzalez Medina (1:11.87) in the A-Final. But all four have them have exhausted their eligibility for Steve Bultman.

Danielle Herrmann, swimming in her home pool at Clovis, is the fifth seed at 1:10.90. Olivia Anderson (1:11.15) and Ali Harrison (1:11.59) also qualified for the final.

Men’s 100 Breast

30-year-old Brandon Fischer is the top seed in the 100 breast on Thursday at the 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series in Clovis with a 1:01.06. The time is a best for Fischer, who was a 1:01.20 at US Nationals last summer. Fischer is ahead of Miguel de Lara Ojeda (1:01.46) and American Devon Nowicki, who recently dropped out of the World University Games team this summer. Nowicki allowed Ian Finnerty to take the vacant spot on the team in the 100 breast.

Daniel Roy, who will be swimming in the World University Games in the 200, is just behind Nowicki with a 1:02.10. Roy just finished his freshman season at Stanford. Virginia Tech commit AJ Pouch is fifth with a 1:02.12 as he is ahead of a trio of internationals. Egypt’s Youssef El-Kamash (1:02.23), Canada’s Richard Funk (1:02.67) and Mexico’s Mauro Castillo (1:02.99) round out the top eight.

Women’s 50 Back

Team Elite’s Ali DeLoof (28.11) had the fastest 50 back of the heats on Thursday at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Clovis. She is ahead of Amy Bilquist (28.41) and Isabelle Stadden (28.43) as they were the only three to break 29 seconds in the heats.  15-year-old Natalie Mannion is the fourth seed at 29.66 ahead of Abby Kapeller (29.90) and Kansas swimmer Yulduz Kuchkarova (29.91).

Katey Lewicki (29.92) and Olivia Ellard (30.07) will also swim in the final.

DeLoof was a late addition to the Pan American Games roster as she will be making the trip to Lima, Peru at the end of the summer.

Men’s 50 Back

Justin Ress had the fastest 50 back in the heats of the 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series in Clovis with a 25.14. He is ahead of fellow national team member Matt Grevers (25.44). Ress will be swimming at the World University Games while Grevers will be at World Championships. Chris Staka (25.51) is the third seed as the top three are the only ones under 26 seconds this morning.

Kristofer Rogic is the fourth seed with a 26.05.

Jack Alexy (26.30), Markus Thormeyer (26.31), Harrison Lierz (26.50) and Andy Song (26.52) also rounded out the top eight.

Women’s 100 Fly

NCAA Champion Louise Hansson put up a solid time in the 100 fly heats on Thursday at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Clovis. Hansson swam a 58.22 in the 100 fly heats as she is ahead of Kendyl Stewart (58.56) and Kelsi Dahlia (58.61). Stewart is going to be swimming at the Pan American Games while Dahlia will be at the World Championships. Hansson represents Sweden and will be at the World Championships.

Hansson has already been a 57.35 earlier this year.

Mallory Comerford, who also swam the 200 free earlier, is the fourth seed at 59.55. The top four were the only ones to break 1:00 this morning.  Lauren Case (1:00.03), Autumn D’Arcy (1:00.45), Haley Black (1:00.99) and Bailey Nero (1:01.50) also qualified for the final.

Men’s 100 Fly

Giles Smith had the fastest time of the morning in the 100 fly at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Clovis with a 52.31. Smith is ahead of teenage phenom Gianluca Urlando (52.71) as those two are head and shoulders above the rest of the field. Smith has only ever been under 52 seconds once in his life when he swam a 51.92 in 2015. Urlando was a 52.04 earlier this year and could also crack 52 tonight.

South Africa’s Ryan Coetzee is the third seed at 54.22, just ahead of Canada’s Josiah Binnema (54.44) and USA National Champion in the 200 fly Justin Wright (54.67).

Loren Gillilan (54.72), Lukas Miller (54.78) and Matteo Gonzalez (55.30) also qualified for the final.

Women’s 400 IM

Evie Pfeifer, who just finished her sophomore year at the University of Texas, has the top time in the 400 IM at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Clovis. Pfeifer swam a 4:46.86 in the 400 IM as she is ahead of two Canadian national team members. Sydney Pickrem (4:48.05) is second while Emily Overholt (4:48.16) is third. Pfeifer will be representing Team USA at the World University Games in Italy in a couple weeks.

Vietnam’s Vien Nguyen (4:52.42) is the fourth seed for the final. Tara Halsted (4:52.97), Monika Gonzalez-Hermosillo (4:53.08), Megan Dalke (4:58.99) and Taylor McCoy (5:00.36) also qualified for the A-Final.

Puerto Rico’s Jarod Arroyo is the top seed in the 400 IM at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Clovis with a 4:24.74. He is well in front of Erick Gordillo (4:27.04) and Brodie Young (4:30.27). Only 13 people swam the event this morning.
