As the 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series in Bloomington headed into its final session this evening, there was still much work to be done. Boasting one of the most competitive finals heat sheets of the weekend, the Sunday night session hardly looked like the conclusion to a grueling four-day weekend. Instead, the athletes attacked the night with newfound vigor, as they tapped into their raw competitive instincts and let the times follow.

Distance stalwart Katie Ledecky lowered her mark for fastest 800 free of 2019, dropping the eighth fastest time all-time. Annie Lazor experienced a breakout swim of her own in the women’s 200 breast, as she shattered the TYR Pro Series record and jumped to first in the world.

Women’s 800 Free

As foretold by the heat sheets, Katie Ledecky dominated the competition in the 800 free final. There was just one question that lingered before she took her mark–What magic did she have in her today?

Quite a bit. Despite a long four days of competition, Ledecky showed no signs of fatigue, negative-splitting her marquee event and surging home to an 8:10.70 finish. This shaved three seconds off her time this year, lowering the mark for fastest time of the year and ranking eighth all time.

It was a tight race for second, as Sierra Schmidt (8:36.71) and Ally McHugh (8:37.34) swam nearly identical races, with Schmidt gaining enough of an advantage in the final 100 to cinch second. Becca Mann barely conceded third, turning in an 8:37.38 to take fourth. Cierra Runge headed the third wave with an 8:41.30, as Megan Byrnes stayed at her hip with an 8:44.01. Cassy Jernberg remained in the mix, dropping an 8:44.23, while Geena Freriks rounded out the women’s distance schedule with an 8:48.13.

Men’s 800 Free

Zane Grothe established his dominance once again on the final night of the meet, demolishing the competition and claiming his monopoly on distance free. The only man under 8:00, Grothe created a race all his own, crashing the pads with a 7:53.40, 11 seconds faster than his closest competitor in Felix Auboeck (8:04.69). Mikey Calvillo (8:08.56) and Marcelo Acosta (8:08.72) engaged in a sprint race at the finish, with Calvillo ultimately gaining the edge to seize third. Eric Knowles put up an impressive swim, turning in an 8:14.02 to beat Johannes Callon (8:14.51). T.C. Smith and Gil Kiesler rounded out the heat with times of 8:18.41 and 8:20.47, respectively.

Regan Smith started off this morning with the only sub-1:00 seed for the women’s 100 back, as she surged to a 59.46 finish to beat Isabelle Stadden’s mark of 1:00.61. Tonight, she decided she had more left in the tank, clocking in at 58.82, despite Stadden’s improvement to 1:00.26.

Lisa Bratton came up from behind, posting a 1:00.88 to seize third and out-touching Kylee Alons (1:00.96). Asia Seidt broke into the top five with a time of 1:01.81, while Bridgette Alexander and Maggie Wanezek battled to the finish with times of 1:02.28 and 1:02.64, respectively.

Just when spectators thought she couldn’t get any faster, Simone Manuel threw up a 24.41 to take first in the last women’s final of the meet. Worthy of the sixth fastest time in the world this year, Manuel left the field mid-pool to send rumblings throughout the swim community.

She was proceeded by Julie Meyen who turned in a 25.13 for second, while Margo Geer’s 25.24 was worthy of third. Kylee Alons broke into the top four with a time of 25.27, edging out Ky-lee Perry (25.36) and Anika Apostalon (25.41) at the finish. Mallory Comerford eclipsed sixth place by a narrow margin, settling for seventh with a time of 25.47, while Daria Pyshnenko closed out the women’s schedule with a 26.29.
