Day Two of the 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series Bloomington was perhaps one of the most climactic nights of the long course season, as Lilly King entered as the underdog and Nathan Adrian rounded out his first full day of competition since his testicular cancer diagnosis. Some of the top names in the sport speckled the deck, each with the same goal of proving themselves early in the season. Things heated up in Bloomington, as Night Two turned heads even on the international stage.

Women’s 100 Free

Despite adding slightly to her time from this morning, Simone Manuel proved victorious once again in the women’s 100 free, dropping a 53.65 to seize the win. Leaving the field behind, Manuel proved herself as one of America’s top sprinters, despite being in an awkward phase of her training.

Recent Louisville grad, Mallory Comerford, partook in a tight race for second, as she and Margo Greer surged to a photo-finish, posting times of 54.11 and 54.18, respectively. Katie Ledecky was not to be excluded from the sprint game, turning in a 55.17 herself to secure fourth over Kylee Alons (55.68). Anika Apostalon added slightly to her time from this morning, coming home in a 55.72, enough to fend off Taylor Ruck’s 55.74. Allison Schmitt rounded out the heat with a 55.89 finals swim, boding well for the U.S.’s depth in sprinters.

Women’s 100 Breast

After an upset this morning in prelims, Lilly King reclaimed her spot at the top of the results sheet with a stellar 1:05.68 100 breast, over two seconds faster than her swim this morning. Bumping Annie Lazor (1:06.03) to second, King was a mere second and a half off of her world record, which stirs excitement in the swim community about what is to come.

There was a three-way tie for third, as Bethany Galat, Emily Escobedo, and Madisyn Cox all clocked in at 1:07.59, slashing their seeds and beating King’s time from this morning. Allie Raab claimed sixth with a 1:09.51, edging out Melissa Rodriguez (1:09.57) and Noelle Peplowski (1:10.79) from the end lane. All eight woman were well under the 2020 Olympic Trials cut.

Isabelle Stadden remained a contender throughout, posting a 28.57 to claim the spot ahead of Fanny Teijonsalo (28.65). The packed heat didn’t end there, as Beata Nelson crashed the pads with a 28.72 to round out the 28’s. Maggie Wanezek and Lisa Bratton (29.22) engaged in a tight sprint race at the flags, with Wanezek seizing the 0.01 advantage, dropping a 29.21.

Men’s 50 Back

Michael Andrew continues to climb the ladder. The face of USRPT, Andrew is not only revolutionizing training but race strategy. Coming off a stellar 100 breast, Andrew was fully prepared for another head-turning swim. He did not disappoint. Surging to the wall for a 24.91 finish, Andrew was the only man under 25 seconds, gaining a healthy lead over Grigory Tarasevich (25.10).

Gabriel Fantoni was in the mix, going just above his seed time to post a 25.34, enough to secure third and pass Hunter Armstrong (25.51). Mohamed Samy also came off a stellar 100 breast before the one-lapper, but seemed unaffected as he crashed the pads with a 25.78 to out-touch Nikos Sofianidis (25.79). Coleman Stewart and Charles Kondor rounded out the top finals heat with times of 25.84 and 26.65, respectively.

Women’s 200 Fly

Katie Drabot took it all in the women’s 200 fly in one of the most climactic events of the meet. Despite leading seventeen-year-old Regan Smith by half a second at the 150, the race came down to the final stroke, where Drabot finished long and touched in just 0.01 ahead of Smith. Surging past the rest of the field, the women left the outer lanes to a race of their own, which Ella Eastin headed. Crashing the pads with a 2:09.92, Eastin dropped over two seconds from this morning to take down Asia Seidt (2:10.94). Remedy Rule was at her hip, swimming in just ahead of Makayla Sargent (2:12.49) with a 2:12.02. Lillie Nordmann (2:12.59) and Sarah Gibson (2:12.93) battled from the outside lanes, topping off the event with impressive early-season times of their own.

Men’s 200 Fly

Jay Litherland, a notorious IM swimmer, may have another event on the docket come 2020. Dropping a 1:57.99 in the 200 fly on Day 2 of the TYR Pro Series in Bloomington, Litherland cinched a decisive win to establish his presence in a new race. Upsetting Corey Gambardella (1:58.49), Litherland slashed his 2:00.41 from this morning to come out victorious. Carson Foster also managed to go under 2:00 while securing third, crashing the pads with a time of 1:59.32 to beat Jean-Pierre Khouzam (2:01.71). Nicolas Albiero stayed on his hip, clocking in at 2:01.07 while taking down Justin Wright (2:01.12). Women’s 400 Free

In true form, Katie Ledecky manhandled the competition in the 400 free, clocking in at 3:59.95 to post one of the fastest times in the world this year. Surging several body lengths ahead of her closest competitor, Madisyn Cox (4:10.91), Ledecky dropped a time merely three and a half seconds off her world record–in May.

Brooke Forde managed to get her hand on the wall third, crashing the pads at 4:11.91 to take down Hannah Moore (4:11. 95) by four hundredths of a second. Sierra Schmidt shaved a little time off of her morning swim, posting a 3:13.66 to break into the top five. Ally McHugh followed close behind with a 4:14.75 to beat Megan Byrnes (4:15.46). Joanna Evans topped off a loaded heat with an impressive 4:16.47.

Men’s 400 free

Zane Grothe was going for a clean sweep of the distance freestyle events, as he cruised to any easy win with a time of 3:48.27 in the men’s 400 free. With consistent splits and a strong final lap, there was no catching Grothe, and Felix Auboeck (3:52.69) was left to contend for second. Johannes Callon (3:54.21) chased the University of Michigan swimmer throughout, but was unable to match his closing speed. Patrick Callen also put forth an impressive effort, stopping the clocks at 3:54.40 to nab fourth ahead of Mikey Calvillo (3:55.99). Eric Knowles showed no signs of fatigue, as he closed in on a 3:56.50 finish, putting distance between himself and Marcelo Acosta (3:58.46). Ricardo Vargas touched in at 4:02.16 to top off the men’s schedule for Day Two.
