2019 Men’s NCAA Swimming Championships Day Three Prelims: Cal Gets Eight A-Finalists, Coleman Stewart Crushes 100 Back (RACE VIDEOS)

During the Friday morning prelims session at the men’s NCAA swimming championships in Austin, Texas, the California Golden Bears continued their dominance and push towards an NCAA title — which would be their first since 2014 — while NC State’s Coleman Stewart and Harvard’s Dean Farris posted all-time top-four times in the 100 back, and Minnesota freshman Max McHugh put up a monster 50.30 in the 100 breast.
Meanwhile, incredible depth in the men’s 200 free meant that 16 men swam faster than what it took to qualify for the championship final at last year’s NCAAs.
Cal placed eight swimmers qualified for individual A-finals, followed by Texas with five and Indiana with four. Cal initially had seven in the top heat, only to get one more when Daniel Carr blasted 44.86 in a 100 back re-swim to move up from 17th to fourth.
Louisville qualified three A-finalists, while NC State, Florida, Arizona, Georgia and Missouri all had multiple A-finalists. Check out the full ups and downs for individual events.

400 IM
Defending national champion Abrahm DeVine entered the meet as the 30th seed in the 400 IM, but DeVine threw down a 3:38.53 in the second of five heats that stood up as the top time out of prelims. The next two qualifiers also came from outside the circle-seeded heats, as Virginia’s Brendan Casey qualified second in 3:39.02 and Cal’s Sean Grieshop took third in 3:39.64.
The next two qualifiers were also Cal Bears, Mike Thomas (3:39.70) and Trenton Julian (3:40.14). None except Julian were seeded to score, and Cal got another boost in their hopes for a national title.
Also making the final were Penn’s Mark Andrew (3:40.28), Arizona’s David Schlicht (3:40.75) and Florida’s Kieran Smith (3:40.78).

100 Fly
Indiana’s Vini Lanza and NC State’s Coleman Stewart put up impressive times in heat six that turned out to be the only sub-45-second performances. Lanza qualified first in 44.68, and Stewart took second in 44.93. Cal’s Ryan Hoffer, the 50 free champion Thursday, took third in 45.04.
Watch Lanza and Stewart swim the 100 fly:
One day after Andrew Seliskar narrowly missed Caeleb Dressel’s 200 IM American record, it’s almost impossible to imagine anyone in this field challenging the 42.80 Dressel swam last season.
Arizona’s Chatham Dobbs (45.20), Cal’s Zheng Quah (45.24) and Florida’s Maxime Rooney (45.29) finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, while Michigan’s Miles Smachlo and Georgia’s Camden Murphy tied for seventh in 45.31.

200 Free
In the fastest field of 200-yard freestyle in history, Cal’s Andrew Seliskar finished with the fastest time in 1:31.64, while 15 men joined him under the 1:33-barrier. While in 2018, it took under 1:33 to make the A-final and under 1:34 to make the B-final, this year it required a sub-1:33 to even score.
Missouri’s Mikel Schreuders qualified second in 1:32.15, followed by Indiana’s Zach Apple (1:32.17), Texas’ Jeff Newkirk (1:32.19) and Ohio State’s Paul DeLakis (1:32.32). Texas’ Townley Haas, the three-time defending champion, qualified sixth in 1:32.35.
Louisville’s Zach Harting (1:32.41) and Texas’ Drew Kibler (1:32.42) took the last two spots in the championship final, locking out Texas’ Jake Sannem (1:32.43) by four hundredths. In this shockingly deep field, NC State’s Jacob Molacek was the last man into the B-final with his 1:32.93.

100 Breast
Minnesota freshman Max McHugh became the fourth-fastest performer in history in the 100 breast as he swam a 50.30 to pace prelims. McHugh, who entered seeded at 51.08, moved up on the all-time list to trail only Ian Finnerty, Caeleb Dressel and Kevin Cordes.
Video McHugh’s 100 breast heat:
Indiana’s Finnerty qualified second in 50.61, and USC’s Carsten Vissering finished third in 50.68 to move into a tie with Will Licon for fifth all-time in the event.
Cal’s Reece Whitley (51.50) and Indiana’s Zane Backes (51.51) qualified fourth and fifth, respectively, and the rest of the A-final will include Georgia Tech’s Caio Pumputis (51.66), Louisville’s Evgenii Somov (51.93) and Missouri’s Jordan O’Brien (51.93). Hawaii’s Olli Kokko also broke 52, swimming a time of 51.98, but that just missed the A-final.

Harvard’s Dean Farris threw down a 44.14 in heat four, but NC State’s Coleman Stewart did even better with a 44.06 in the final heat to claim the top seed. That made Stewart the second-fastest man in history behind Ryan Murphy, while Farris ranks fourth all-time behind Murphy, Stewart and Nick Thoman.

Cal’s Daniel Carr intially finished 17th but re-swam the event after the session. In that second swim, he moved into fourth with his time of 44.86.
Louisville’s Nicolas Albiero finished the prelims in fifth at 44.93, followed by Texas’ Ryan Harty (45.05) and Georgia’s Javier Acevedo (45.09). Alabama’s Zane Waddell (45.11) was knocked from the A-final after Carr’s re-swim, and Texas’ Austin Katz was knocked out of scoring entirely.
