2019 Canadian Swimming Trials Day Four Finals: Knelson, Oleksiak, Ruck Climb World Rankings
The 2019 Canadian Swimming Trials continued in Toronto with finals of the Para 200 Free, 50 Breast and 100 Breast, as well as the 200 Free, 200 Fly and 50 Free. This is the qualifying meet for all upcoming major international meets for the Canadian team, including the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.
In order to qualify for Worlds, swimmers must finish in the top 2 of their event and achieve a FINA ‘A’ qualifying standard.
Women’s Para 200 Freestyle
Aly Van Wyck-Smart claimed gold with 688 points and a 5:25.20 in the 200 Free. Her swim was over twenty seconds faster than what she went in the preliminaries. Angela Marina also posted a faster swim in the finals coming in at 2:18.45 for second. Miori Henailt rounded out the top three in 2:27.65.

Men’s Para 200 Freestyle
Nicholas Bennett broke the two-minute barrier in the men’s event, coming in at 1:59.74 and 913 points for the top finish. Tyson MacDonald posted a two second drop for second in 1:05.39 and was followed by Nicholas Schweigl in third (2:49.70).

Women’s 200 Freestyle
Penny Oleksiak (1:56.92) and Taylor Ruck (1:56.97) posted the sixth- and seventh-fastest times in the world so far this year as they battled it out in the 200 Freestyle. A quick 30.12 third fifty allowed Ruck to take over the lead at the 150 mark, but Oleksiak fought back to take the win. Kayla Sanchez (1:58.28) and Rebecca Smith (1:58.64) also finished under the FINA ‘A’ Standard. Both swims are in the top 25 in the world so far this year. Their swims earned them spots on Canada’s 800 Freestyle Relay in Gwangju.

Men’s 200 Freestyle
Markus Thormeyer swam just outside the World’s top-ten rankings by coming in at 1:47.60 for the win in the 200 Freestyle. Alex Pratt (1:48.74), Jeremy Bagshaw (1:49.03) and Carson Olafson (1:49.59) rounded out the top four, all just outside the FINA ‘A’ Standard. Olafson had the lead at the halfway point, but Thormeyer out-split the completion by a full second on the third fifty.

Women’s 200 Butterfly
Mary-Sophie Harvey (2:11.71) and Danielle Hanus (2:11.79) provided an exciting race in the women’s 200 Butterfly. Harvey utilized her strong back-half to take the win. Mabel Zavaros took third in 2:13.61. Also of note, Summer McIntosh broke her own 11-12 Canadian National Age Group Record. Her swim of 2:15.24 shattered her preliminary swim of 2:16.02.

Men’s 200 Butterfly
Mack Darragh won the men’s race, qualifying for World Championships in 1:56.68. The time was four tenths off his personal best but is the twelfth-fastest performance in the world so far this year. Montana Champagne (1:59.21) and Cole Pratt (1:59.89) also came in under two minutes. It was the first time under the barrier for both swimmers.

Faith Nelson earned a World Championships swim in the 50 Breaststroke after winning the event and coming in two tenths under the FINA ‘A’ Standard. Her time ranks eighth worldwide so far this year. Rachel Nicol came in right behind at 21.23, just off the mark. Nina Kucheran rounded out the top three in a best time of 31.66.
