2019 ACC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships: NC State Upset in 800 Free Relay
The first night of the 2019 ACC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships got started with the 200 medley and 800 free relays. NC State took care of business in the medley relay by taking down the conference record in the process with a 1:22.37 to sit second in Division I right now.
Louisville upset two-time defending NCAA Champions NC State in the 800 free relay with a 6:11.84 as the Wolfpack faded to fourth behind the two Virginia schools.
Men’s diving took place last week at the women’s championships so the 3m was factored into scoring tonight. Louisville leads the team standings which can be seen below.

200 Medley Relay
NC State blasted the 200 medley relay with a 1:22.37 to lower the conference and meet record by almost a full second. Coleman Stewart (20.75), Daniel Graber (23.27), Nyls Korstanje (19.81) and Justin Ress (18.54) won for the Wolfpack as they brought down the conference record from a 1:23.16. The old record was set at the ACC meet in 2017 by NC State.
NC State finished ahead of Louisville (1:23.10) and Florida State (1:23.63). NC State is currently second in Division I right now behind Alabama’s (1:22.19) time from SECs last week. Louisville is now fourth behind the Crimson Tide, NC State and Tennessee (1:22.79).
The fastest splits outside of NC State came from Louisville’s Nicolas Albiero (21.00), Georgia Tech’s Caio Pumputis (23.24), Florida State’s Kanoa Kaleoaloha (19.96) and Louisville’s Andrej Barna (18.56).
Georgia Tech, who was the top seed coming into the meet, added a little bit from its midseason invite. The Yellow Jackets placed fourth at 1:24.42.
Pittsburgh (1:24.58), Duke (1:24.90), Virginia (1:25.19) and Virginia Tech (1:25.75) also placed in the top eight.

3m Diving
(Completed last week at the women’s championships)
Miami’s Briadam Herrera won his second board of the meet as the senior won the 3m title with a 452.55. Herrera won the 1m last night as the Hurricanes picked up 32 more points with Hererra’s victory. Fellow Cane Zach Cooper (373.00) moved up to fourth in the final. Miami only has men’s diving and does not have a men’s swimming program.
Duke’s Evan Moretti finished second behind Hererra as he was the only other diver over 400 points with a 403.55 score. Florida State’s Joshua Davidson (387.55) finished third.
Florida State’s Cameron Thatcher (360.15), Louisville’s Daniel Pinto (322.10), Georgia Tech’s Matt Casillas (309.50) and Louisville’s Daniel Fecteau (294.75) also competed in the final.

800 Free Relay
In a bit of a surprise, Louisville won the 800 free relay on Wednesday night at the ACC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro with a 6:11.84. Nicolas Albiero (1:33.73), Zach Harting (1:32.52), Bartosz Piszczorowicz (1:32.48) and Colton Paulson (1:33.11) won by four full seconds over Virginia (6:16.00) and Virginia Tech (6:16.08).
Louisville’s time puts them third in Division I right now behind Florida (6:10.50) and Missouri (6:11.77).
The shocking part of the race was that two-time defending NCAA Champion NC State, which returned three of the four guys from the record setting relay a year ago, finished in fourth place. Andreas Vazaios (1:33.50), Jacob Molacek (1:35.27), Noah Hensley (1:34.00) and Justin Ress (1:33.71) finished at 6:16.48 as they could not get by the two Virginia schools.
Obviously there is no time to panic if you are NC State, since they should be safely on to the NCAA Championships. However, a 6:16.48 puts them eighth in the NCAA right now with the Big Ten and Pac-12 meets still to go. Unless they put up a time trial, NC State might not be in the fastest seeded heat at NCAAs in four weeks since it is a timed final event.
The fastest splits outside of the winners came from Virginia Tech’s Lane Stone (1:32.47), NC State’s Vazaios (1:33.50), Virginia’s George Wozencraft (1:33.58) and Notre Dame’s Aaron Schultz (1:33.68).
Florida State (6:18.35), Notre Dame (6:19.29), Georgia Tech (6:19.43) and Pittsburgh (6:19.87) also placed in the top eight.
That 🥇 feeling!
