100 Free

With a fourth straight conference title pretty much secured already, NC State swept the top four spots in the men’s 100 free. Olympic gold medalist Ryan Held finished first in 41.41, the second third-fastest mark in the country this season behind Caeleb Dressel (40.87). (Later in the evening, Texas’ Tate Jackson moved passed Held in the national rankings with his time of 41.27 at the Big 12 championships.) Held also broke his own meet record of 41.61 set last year

Justin Ress finished second in 41.86, just ahead of Jacob Molacek (41.89), times that rank sixth and seventh in the country this season, respectively. Wolfpack freshman Giovanni Izzo claimed fourth in 42.69 to complete the dominance performance. Perhaps appropriately, Wolfpack legend Cullen Jones was on hand to present awards to his three training partners.

Florida State’s Will Pisani (42.72), Louisville’s Andrej Barna (42.82), Notre Dame’s Daniel Spees (43.20) and Florida State’s Emir Muratovic (43.29) also swam in the final.

4×100 Free Relay

The NC State Wolfpack finished off their dominant effort at the ACC championships, with an American record in the men’s 4×100 free relay.

Swimming with a full beard, Ryan Held led off in 41.45, just off his ACC title-winning time of 41.45 from earlier in the night, before Justin Ress split an amazing 40.87 on the second leg. Jacob Molaceck (41.71) and Coleman Stewart (41.66) brought the team home to a final time of 2:45.69.

That annihilated the previous American record of 2:47.02 that the Texas foursome of Jimmy FeigenRicky BerensPeter Jameson and David Walters set back in 2009. The Wolfpack recorded the second-fastest relay in history, behind only the 2:45.39 set by Texas’ Brett RinggoldJack CongerTownley Haas and Joseph Schooling at last year’s NCAA championships.

Finally, the team crushed its conferene record of 2:46.81 that a team which included Held set back in 2016 on the way to an NCAA title.

NC State won the race by more than five seconds, as Florida State’s team of Emir MuratovicFelipe Ribeiro de SouzlipeWill Pisani and Kanoa Kaleoaloha took second in 2:50.63. Louisville’s Nicolas AlbieroAndrej BarnaEvgenii Somov and Zach Harting took third in 2:51.09.

Virginia (2:51.28), Notre Dame (2:51.62), Duke (2:53.99), Georgia Tech (2:54.96) and North Carolina (2:55.35) also finished in the top eight.
