Men’s 50 free

Olympic gold medalist Cesar Cielo, who scratched out of the chance to make the Brazilian Olympic roster in the 100, threw down a swift time in prelims of the men’s 50-meter free at the 2016 Maria Lenk Trophy meet.

Cielo became the sixth Brazilian under the FINA A cut this year in a qualifying event with a 21.99. That swim moved him up to seventh in the world rankings, and put him in the mix with Bruno Fratus (21.50) as the top two swimmers from Brazil in either the Brazil Open or this meet.

Italo Duarte, who has a qualifying time of 22.08 from the Brazil Open, qualified second in 22.16. Marcelo Chierighini, the 100 free winner, tied Canada’s Santo Condorelli for third with 22.22s.

Ukraine’s Andrii Govorov (22.29), Fratus (22.35), Alan Vitoria (22.45) and Gabriel Santos (22.48) also made the championship finale.

Women’s 50 free

Etiene Medeiros, who already has a qualifying time of 24.71 from the Brazil Open, put up the top time in prelims with a time of 24.84.

Lorrane Cristina also cleared the 25.28 FINA A cut with a second-seeded 25.06. That’s slower than Graciele Herrmann’s Brazil Open time of 24.92 to stand as the second-best qualifying so far.

Herrmann took third this morning in 25.35 with Larissa Oliveira placing fourth in 25.41.

Alessandra Marchioro (25.67), Priscila De Souza (25.74), Daiene Dias (25.91) and Luana Ribeiro (25.99) all cleared 26 seconds to make the finale.

Men’s 100 fly

A trio of swimmers came into the meet with FINA A cuts from the Brazil Open.

Henrique Martins (52.14), Marcos Macedo (52.17) and Nicholas Santos (52.31) all cleared the FINA A cut time of 52.36.

Today, Vinicius Lanza moved into that mix with a top-seeded time of 52.22. But, he’ll have to get into the 52.1s to have a chance to make the Olympic team.

Thiago Pereira qualified second today in 52.48 with Santiago Grassi of Argentina taking third in 52.68.

Henrique Souza (52.71), Guilherme Rosolen (52.73), Macedo (52.83), Arthur Mendes (52.87) and Kaio Almeida (53.01) also made the top eight.

Women’s 200 back

China’s Yang Yifei paced prelims with a time of 2:14.97, well off the FINA A cut of 2:10.60.

Natalia De Luccas finished second in 2:16.55 with Beatriz Silva qualifying third in 2:17.95.

Fernanda Goeij (2:18.93), Maria Pessanha (2:19.14), Marina Oliveira (2:19.31), Florencia Perotti (2:19.38) and Aline Caetano (2:19.79) qualified fourth through eighth to comprise the championship eight.
