Women’s 50 fly

Elena Gemo won the sprint fly finale in a time of 26.12 to move to 10th in the world rankings.

Silvia Di Pietro finished second in 26.34 with Ilaria Bianchi taking third overall in 27.00.

Elena Di Liddo (27.42), Sara Gyertyanffy (27.51), Alice Loffredo (27.57), Sara Franceschi (27.64) and Federica Greco (27.85) also competed in the finale.

Men’s 100 fly

Matteo Rivolta raced his way to fifth in the world rankings in the men’s 100-meter fly at the 2016 Italian Nationals.

Rivolta picked up a winning time of 51.54 to move to fifth in the world behind Piero Codia.  Codia moved to fourth in the world with a 51.42 earlier in the day.

Codia took second tonight in 51.72 with Rivolta and Codia both clearing the FINA A cut of 52.36 for potential selection onto the Olympic team.

Daniele D’Angelo (52.60), Francesco Giordano (52.89), Giacomo Carini (53.19), Filippo Berlincioni (53.47), Simone Geni (53.47) and Enzo Nardozza (54.70) finished third through eighth in finals.

Women’s 200 breast

Lisa Fissneider touched out Ilaria Scarcella to win the women’s 200-meter breast as both cleared the FINA A cut of 2:26.94 for possible Olympic selection.

Fissneider won in a time of 2:26.74 with Scarcella putting up a 2:26.86 for second.

Francesca Fangio wound up third overall in finals tonight in 2:27.06.

Giulia Verona (2:27.43), Elisa Celli (2:28.83), Lisa Angiolini (2:30.09), Natalia Foffi (2:30.66) and Letizia Memo (2:31.68) put up the rest of the times in finals.

Men’s 400 IM

Federico Turrini unleashed a 4:11.95 in the men’s 400-meter IM to move to third in the world at the 2016 Italian Nationals.

Turrini’s time put him behind only Kosuke Hagino (4:08.90) and Thomas Fraser-Holmes (4:11.09) in the world this year, and clearly undercut the FINA A cut of 4:16.71.

In fact, Luca Marin also eclipsed the FINA A cut with a 4:14.65 for second to set up potential Olympic selection by Italy.

Giorgio Gaetani finished third overall in 4:19.70 with Lorenzo Tarocchi (4:20.78) taking fourth.

Matteo Pelizzari (4:21.20), Francesco Pavone (4:21.96), Giovanni Sorriso (4:21.98) and Stefano Ventrone (4:28.11) also swam in the finale.

Simona Quadarella (8:28.06) and Diletta Carli (8:28.22) pushed each other well under the FINA A cut of 8:33.97 in the women’s 800-meter free.

Quadarella finished with the Italian Spring National Championship record, beating the former mark of 8:28.92 set by Cristina Sossi in 1989.

Martina De Memme (8:31.79), Martina Rita Caramignoli (8:38.12), Giorgia Romei (8:39.32), Aurora Ponsele (8:40.59), Rachele Bruni (8:40.77) and Giulia Gabbrielleschi (8:41.07) finished third through sixth.

Fabio Scozzoli picked up second overall in 1:00.75 with Nicolo Martinenghi finishing third in 1:00.92.

Flavio Bizzarri (1:01.33), Lorenzo Antonelli (1:01.64), Luca Pizzini (1:02.04), Edoardo Giorgetti (1:02.10) and Claudio Fossi (1:02.38) raced to fourth through eighth.

Women’s 100 free

Federica Pellegrini, who first competed in the Olympics at the 2004 Olympic Games, is headed to her fourth Olympic Games after posting a 53.78 in the women’s 100-meter free at the 2016 Italian Nationals.

Pellegrini, a 2008 Olympic gold medalist in the 200 free, cleared the FINA A cut of 54.43 to secure a spot on the Rio roster.

Erika Ferraioli claimed second with a time of 54.87, just missing the A cut, while Aglaia Pezzato took third in 55.03.

Silvia Di Pietro (55.10), Laura Letrari (55.40), Alice Mizzau (55.66), Giada Galizi (55.67) and Paola Biagioli (55.72) also swam in the A final.
