Men’s 200 Freestyle

After surging into the finish to win the final heat, Glenn Sugerloose (1:46.93) of Belgium became the top qualifier moving into tonight’s semifinals. Tonight’s second seed will be Velimir Stjepanovic of Serbia, who posted a 1:47.03. Host country’s James Guy touched third in 1:47.11.

Women’s 100 Breaststroke

Though well off her world’s third best 1:05.82, Ruta Meiluyte of Lithuania easily secured the top seed for tonight’s semifinal, finishing in 1:06.97. Finland’s Jenna Laukkanen returns as tonight’s second seed with her 1:07.67. Italy’s Martina Carraro was just behind with a 1:07.73.

Five time European Champion Laszlo Cseh claimed the first circle seeded heat with a 1:58.17, becoming the top seed in the semifinals. After winning the second circle seeded heat in 1:59.90, Portugal’s Alexis Manacas Santos will return second tonight. Andreas Vazaios returns third with his 2:00.00.

Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands was first to the wall this morning, stopping the clock in 53.37, just off her world’s fifth best 53.21. Jeanette Ottesen had the second fastest time of the morning with a 53.78.

Femke Heemskerk will enter semifinals in third with a 54.04.

Defending champion Sarah Sjoestroem qualified fourth in 54.04.

There were only two heats of this event. France dominated the first heat, but was disqualified.

The defending European and world champions from Great Britain topped heat two in 3:47.92, just ahead of Italy in 3:48.52. Sweden, also in heat three, will return to finals as the third seed with a 3:51.72.

Gregorio Paltrinieri finished just seven seconds short of his own European record in 14:46.81. That is the fourth fastest time in the world this year, though he already holds the second best. Gabriele Detti battled Jan Micka through the finish as the two finished in 14:58.56 and 14:58.62. They’ll swim against each other again in tomorrow night’s final.
