2016 AT&T Winter National Championships: Day 3 Prelims Recap

12 events were on the slate for the third day of prelims at the AT&T Winter National Championships in Atlanta. Read below for our full live recap of the races.

Women’s 400 IM:

Minnesota’s Brooke Zeiger topped the qualifying list in prelims of the women’s 400 IM, powering to a 4:08.07 from heat four.

Lindsay Clary of Ohio State, the top seed going into the event, picked up the second place seed with a 4:09.15. Teammate Meg Bailey snagged the third place seed with a time of 4:11.68.

Minnesota added another representative to the ‘A’ final with a fourth place seed from Breanne Siwicki. She stopped the clock at a final time of 4:12.39.

Virginia Gator’s Emma Muzzy and Metroplex’s Vanessa Pearl posted matching times of 4:12.64 from heats five and three respectively for the fifth place seed.

Regan Barney, representing Longhorn Aquatics, picked up the seventh place seed with a 4:13.17, while Indiana’s Sam Lisy was eighth in prelims with a 4:13.76.

Men’s 400 IM:

Nitro’s Sean Grieshop maintained his top seed with a 3:48.35 in prelims of the men’s 400 IM. He will return tonight to lead the men’s ‘A’ final from the middle of the pool.

Juan Sequera, swimming unattached, turned in a 3:48.83 to grab the second place seed, followed by Nate Carr’s qualifying time of 3:49.71.

Minnesota’s Josh Bushman grabbed the fourth place seed with a 3:50.24, just ahead of 16-year-old Christopher Jhong and his time of 3:50.87. Jhong’s time moves him into the top 20 for the All-Time rankings in the 15-16 age group.

FAST’s Omar Pinzon (3:51.77), Sandpiper’s Carter Grimes (3:51.89), and Virginia Gator’s Keith Myburgh (3:51.96) round out the top eight qualifiers.

Women’s 100 Fly:

Aliena Schmidtke, swimming unattached, posted the only sub-53 second swim in prelims of the women’s 100 fly. Schmidtke powered to first from the outside lane in heat six to grab the top seed in tonight’s ‘A’ final.

Virginia Gator’s Olivia Bray picked up the second place seed with a 53.03, while Schroeder YMCA’s Hannah Saiz grabbed a close third with a 53.07.

Minnesota’s Danielle Nack turned in a 53.28 to return as the fourth place seed, followed by Indiana’s Christie Jensen (53.33).

Claire Donahue (53.35), University of North Carolina’s Sarah Koucheki (53.36), and Indiana’s Gia Dalesandro (53.56) finished sixth through eighth respectively.

Men’s 100 Fly:

Indiana’s Vini Lanza flirted with a sub-46 second swim in prelims of the men’s 100 fly, stopping the clock at a 46.08. Lanza topped the competition in the men’s 200 IM yesterday and will look to add a second gold medal to his collection.

Minnesota’s Daryl Turner posted the only other 46-second swim with a qualifying time of 46.49, good for the second place seed.

Ryan Mccoy, swimming unattached, grabbed the third place seed with a 47.23, while Olympian Tom Shields posted a 47.54 for the fourth place seed. Shields swam from behind in the final heat before using his signature underwater dolphin kicks to great effect off the final turn, passing his competition and cruising in to win the heat.

Grand Canyon University’s Daniil Antipov picked up fifth with a 47.62, followed by Nation’s Capital’s Sam Pomajevich and his time of 47.64.

Tuomas Pokkinen and Club Mountaineer’s Bryce Bohman finished seventh and eighth respectively with times of 47.67 and 47.89.

Women’s 200 Free:

Isabel Ivey of Gator Swim Club topped the preliminary field of the women’s 200 free with a 1:45.43 from heat four, posting one of two sub 1:46 second swims.

Olympian Melanie Margalis, representing Saint Petersburg, dashed to a 1:45.77 from heat three, joining Ivey beneath the 1:46 mark.

Georgia Tech’s Iris Wang delivered a 1:46.26 for the third place seed, followed closely by Olympian Amanda Weir and her time of 1:46.29.

Hannah Moore of NC State took fifth overall in prelims with a 1:46.43, while Chattahoochee’s Emma Cole picked up the sixth place seed with a 1:47.15.

16-year-old Sinead Ekstreen squeezed into the ‘A’ final with a 1:47.39, just ahead of SMU’s Victoria Cunningham and her time of 1:47.56.

Men’s 200 Free:

Florida freshman Maxime Rooney raced ahead of the competition in prelims of the men’s 200 free, posting a qualifying time of 1:34.73 to return as the top seed for the ‘A’ final.

University of North Carolina’s Jorden Merrilees picked up the second place seed with a 1:36.15, followed closely by the Indiana trio of Anze Tavcar, Jackson Miller, and Marwan El Kamash. Tavcar turned in a 1:36.22 for the third place seed, while Miller and Kamash posted matching times of 1:36.22.

15-year-old sprint star Jack Dolan qualified for his second ‘A’ final with a 1:36.68 to squeeze into the top 20 All-Time list for the 15-16 year old age group.

Nation’s Capital’s Sam Pomajevich grabbed seventh with a 1:36.88, while Minnesota’s Paul Fair completed the top eight qualifiers with a 1:37.35.

Women’s 100 Breast:

Club Wolverine’s Miranda Tucker flirted with a sub-59 second swim in prelims of the women’s 100 breaststroke. Tucker stopped the clock at a 59.00 to claim the top seed going into tonight’s ‘A’ final.

New York Athletic Club’s Breeja Larson delivered a 59.14 for the second place seed, while Clovis Swim Club’s Danielle Herrmann snagged the third place seed with a 59.24.

Melanie Margalis rebounded from a quick turn-around with the 200 free to add a fourth place qualifying time of 59.50.

Minnesota’s Lindsey Horejsi grabbed fifth overall with a 59.67, followed by Canyon Aquatic Club’s Nikol Popov (59.74).

Rachel Bernhardt of Drexel University and Margaret Aroesty of Long Island Aquatic Club were seventh and eighth with times of 1:00.49 and 1:00.70 respectively.

Men’s 100 Breast:

Kevin Cordes, the American Record holder in the men’s 100 breaststroke SCY, topped the competition in prelims with a 52.16 swim.

Indiana’s Ian Finnerty and Michigan State’s Alec Kandt posted strikingly similar times from separate heats to qualify second and third or tonight’s final. Finnerty stopped the clock at a 53.32 from heat six, while Kandt delivered a 53.34 from heat five.

Mike Alexandrov of New York Athletic Club posted a qualifying time of 53.44, followed by University of North Carolina’s Criag Emslie and his time of 53.37.

Rostyslav Fedyna, swimming unattached, picked up the sixth place seed with a 53.71, just ahead of Minnesota’s Conner McHugh (53.83) and WEST Swim Club’s Nick Zito (54.32).

Women’s 100 Back:

Bridgette Alexander, swimming unattached, grabbed the top seed in prelims of the women’s 100 back with a 52.80. Alexander posted the only sub-53 second swim and succeeded in slashing .12 seconds off her entry time of 52.92.

Indiana’s Marie Chamberlain added a 53.02 to claim the second place seed, while Canyon Aquatics’ Isabella Arcila finished third in prelims with a 53.15.

Tevyn Waddell of Minnesota finished fourth in prelims with a 53.43, followed by close qualifying times from University of North Carolina’s Caroline Baldwin (53.61) and Indiana’s Ally Rockett (53.62).

Both UNC and Minnesota added additional qualifiers with qualifying times from Sarah Hitchens (53.82) and Zoe Avestruz (53.91).

Men’s 100 Back:

The men’s 100 back was highlighted by a talented field of athletes as the top eight qualifiers posted times within 1.56 seconds of one another.

Bob Glover of Indiana picked up the top seed with a 46.13 from heat five, while New York Athletic Club’s Arkady Vyatchanin turned in a 46.87 from heat two for the second place seed.

Minnesota’s Daryl Turner earned the third place seed with a 47.12, followed by a close qualifying time from Grand Canyon’s Mark Nikolaev (47.13).

Bryce Bohman of Club Mountaineer posted a 47.24 for the fifth place seed, just ahead of a tie between Tom Shields and Greater Omaha’s Jacob Molacek. Shields and Molacek delivered matching times of 47.28 from heat two.

FAST’s Omar Pinzon completed the list of qualifiers with a 47.69.

Nitro’s Sean Grieshop maintained his top seed with a 4:38.35 — think that should be a 3:48.35.
