2016 AT&T Winter National Championships: Day 2 Prelims Recap

Women’s 500 Free:

Erica Sullivan, representing Sandpipers of Nevada, turned in the top time of the morning in the women’s 500-yard freestyle. Sullivan led heat four for the majority of the race, despite a huge push from Ohio State’s Lindsey Clary. Sullivan stopped the clock at a 4:39.66 over Clary’s 4:40.46 to claim the top two seeds.

The Indiana duo of Stephanie Marchuk and Cassy Jernberg picked up the third and fourth place seeds with times of 4:44.60 and 4:45.47 respectively.

Minnesota added two athletes to tonight’s ‘A’ final as Brooke Zeiger (4:45.86) and Erin Emery (4:46.12) grabbed the fifth and sixth place seeds.

Miranda Heckman of Pleasanton Seahawks and Amanda Richey of Pitt round out the top eight qualifiers with times of 4:47.61 and 4:47.85 respectively.

Men’s 500 Free:

Indiana swept the top three qualifying spots in the men’s 500 free, posting times within one second each other from three separate heats.

Max Irwin claimed the top seed with a 4:19.40 finish from the sixth and final heat, while teammate Jackson Miller grabbed second with a 4:19.50 from heat five. Marwan El Kamash turned in a time of 4:20.20 to pick up the third place seed from heat three.

Nation’s Capital’s Sam Pomajevich posted a 4:21.24 for the fourth place seed, followed by University of North Carolina’s Jorden Merrilees (4:21.67).

Florida’s Ben Lawless and Nitro’s Sean Grieshop turned in close times of 4:21.71 and 4:21.98 to earn the sixth and seventh place seeds.

Adam Destrampe of Indiana posted a 4:22.84, good for the eighth place seed in tonight’s ‘A’ final.

Women’s 200 IM:

Melanie Margalis, representing St. Petersburg Aquatics, made her return to short course swimming with the top seed of the morning in the women’s 200 IM, stopping the clock at a 1:56.07.

Club Wolverine’s Miranda Tucker picked up the second place seed for tonight’s final with a 1:57.95, while Canyon Aquatics’ Nikol Popov earned third with a 1:58.30.

Ohio State’s Meg Bailey turned in a 1:58.91 for the fourth place seed, followed quickly by Metroplex Aquatics’ Vanessa Pearl and her time of 1:58.96.

Hannah Moore of NC State (1:58.98), Danielle Herrmann of Clovis Swim Club (1:58.99), and Kristen Romano of Long Island Aquatic Club (1:59.03) completed the top eight qualifiers.

Men’s 200 IM:

Indiana continued their impressive morning with a top showing in the men’s 200 IM prelims. Vini Lanza delivered the top time of the morning with a 1:43.76, more than two seconds ahead of the competition.

Juan Sequera, swimming unattached, turned in a 1:45.92 for the second place seed, while Nate Carr, also swimming unattached, picked up third with a 1:46.15.

University of North Carolina’s Michael Meyer posted a 1:47.01 for fourth, followed by FAST’s Omar Pinzon (1:47.31).

Florida’s Maxime Rooney and Indiana’s Bob Glover delivered matching times of 1:47.53 from heats three and six respectively.

Sean Lee of Swim Pasadena rounded out the top eight qualifiers with a time of 1:48.03.

Women’s 50 Free:

Olympian Amanda Weir, representing SwimAtlanta, splashed her way to the top of the qualifiers list in the women’s 50 free with a 22.17 finish.

Isabella Arcila, a Colombian Olympian from Canyons Aquatic Club, touched second overall with a 22.44, followed by a tie between Michigan State’s Racheal Bukowski and University of North Carolina’s Caroline Baldwin. Bukowski and Baldwin stopped the clock at matching 22.50’s from heats six and seven respectively.

SwimAtlanta’s Maddie Locus posted a close fifth with a 22.56, just ahead of Minnesota’s Danielle Nack’s 22.68.

The top eight concluded with another tie as University of North Carolina teammates Sarah Hitchens and Brooke Bauer swam to matching 22.73’s.

Men’s 50 Free:

Tom Shields flexed his sprint speed in prelims of the men’s 50 free, grabbing the first place seed with a dynamic 19.31.

Minnesota’s Bowen Becker turned in a 19.60 for the second place seed, while Jacob Molacek of Greater Omaha Area Aquatics picked up third with a 19.69.

Indiana picked up the fourth and fifth place seeds with solid swims from Sam Lorentz (19.72) and Oliver Patrouch (19.92).

Meanwhile, 15-year-old Jack Dolan of Rockwood Swim Club arguably stole the show with a 20.01 swim. Dolan sprinted past his previous best of 20.53 to land at #7 all-time for the 15-16 age group in the 50 free. As Dolan improves he could unseat big names like Caeleb Dressel (#3 19.82) or Ryan Hoffer (#2 19.38).

Minnesota’s Paul Fair and Indiana’s Josh Romany completed the top eight qualifiers with times of 20.05 and 20.10 respectively.
