2016 Arena Pro Swim Series Mesa: Day 2 Finals Live Recap

Action at the Arena Pro Swim Series in Mesa continues this evening, with the second night of finals. Hit refresh for the latest coverage.

Women’s 200 Fly

Cammile Adams held on to her top seed out of the morning with a 2:08.59 to win the first event of the night. That time is the 18th best in the world this year, and three tenths off her 2:08.21 from the Austin stop of the Pro Series.

Adams had more competition in finals than she did in prelims as Cassidy Bayer was just over a second behind in 2:09.68. Maya Dirado completed the podium finishes with a 2:01.33.

Ella Eastin and Kelsi Worrell swapped places from their yards battle in March as Eastin out touched Worrell 2:12.59 to 2:12.74.

Ruby Martin (2:13.36) and Katinka Hosszu (2:14.09) completed the A final.

Men’s 200 Fly

Michael Phelps was a 54.93 at the 100 meter mark, nearly two seconds ahead of the field, and closed strong enough to win in 1:58.14. That swim still does not even crack the world’s top 20 this season.

Pace Clark was right on his heels with a 1:58.71. Jonathan Gomez finished third in 1:58.79.

Jack Conger raced to a 1:59.83 finish, the only other swimmer under two minutes.

Zach Harting (2:00.32) out touched Gunnar Bentz (2:00.46) and Chase Kalisz (2:00.89).

Kyler Vanswol finished eight in 2:03.24.

Women’s 50 Freestyle

Madison Kennedy jumped from 11th to sixth in the world with her 24.45. Her previous season best was a 24.71 from the Orlando stop of the Pro Series. That time broke Dara Torres’ American textile record of 24.53 from 2007.

Dana Vollmer continued the impressive speed this weekend and raced to a 24.69, which will vault her to tenth.

Abby Weitzeil matched her season best with a 24.72. Simone Manuel posted a 24.78. Kelis Worrell was back on the blocks again, finishing fifth in 25.07.

Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace (25.14), Amanda Weir (25.45), and Isabella Arcila (25.69) also competed in the A final.

Lia Neal won the B final in 25.13.

Men’s 50 Freestyle

Nathan Adrian dropped one one hundredth off his season best to post a 21.69 tonight. That time improves his third fastest time in the world.

Sprint veterans Anthony Ervin and Cullen Jones finished in second an third with times of 22.28 and 22.30.

Erik Risolvato touched in 22.44. Luis Flores (22.45), Nick Soedel (22.66), Michael Chadwick (22.71), and Derek Toomey (22.81) rounded out the A final.

Jimmy Feigen posted a 22.69 to win the B final.

Women’s 100 Back

Maya Dirado got to the wall first to win the 100 backstroke tonight with a time of 1:00.71. Kirsty Coventry was just a hair behind in 1:00.74. On her second swim of the night, Katinka Hosszu finished third with a 1:00.84.

Kaitlin Harty placed fourth in 1:01.11. Missy Franklin was fifth in 1:01.28. Felicia Lee and Ella Eastin touched in 1:02.10 and 1:02.17. Franklin’s training partner Fernanda Gonzalez rounded out the final in 1:03.80.

Men’s 100 Back

David Plummer topped the field by over a second tonight in the 100 backstroke. Plummer stopped the clock in 54.29. Ryan Lochte finished second in 55.35. Arkady Vyatchanin completed the podium in 55.39.

Eugen Godsoe finished fourth with a 55.72.

Paul Le (56.44), Sean Lehane (56.62), Marcos Palacios (57.07) and Michael Taylor (57.15) completed the A final.

Women’s 200 Breast

Breeja Larson was first at the 100 from lane one with a 1:09.97 and came home with a win, stopping the clock at 2:26.64. Last night she won the B final of the 100 Breaststroke.

Ashley McGregor finished second in 2:27.68. Hilde Luthersdottir touched third in 2:28.04.

Melanie Margalis (2:28.44), Haley Spencer (2:29.47), and Laura Sogar (2:29.58) were also under 2:30.

Emma Schoettmer (2:30.48) and Molly Hannis (2:31.11) also competed in the A final.

Katie Meili won the B final in 2:28.55.

Men’s 200 Breaststroke

Bj Johnson was victorious in the men’s 200 breaststroke tonight with a final time of 2:14.16. Nic Fink finished second in 2:15.06. Miguel De Lara Ojeda earned third place honors with a 2:15.77.

Miguel Chavez touched fourth in 2:16.06. Chase Kalisz was first after the morning, but fell to fifth tonight with a time of 2:16.19.

Steven Stumph (2:16.63), Max Williamson (2:18.19), and Andrew Wilson (2:21.15) placed sixth through eighth.

Women’s 400 Freestyle

To nobody’s surprise, it was once again Katie Ledecky from start to finish in the 400 freestyle tonight. Ledecky stopped the clock in 4:02.15 ahead of this morning’s 4:03.54. That was once again the second fastest time in the world this year, only slower than her own world’s fastest 400 of 3:59.54.

Cierra Runge battled with teammate Lotte Friis for second. Runge was second with a 4:08.08 to Friis’ 4:08.89. Other NBAC teammate Allison Schmitt placed fourth in 4:08.89.

In her third swim in under 90 minutes, Katinka Hosszu finished fifth in 4:14.59. Sarah Henry was just behind her in 4:14.76.

Becca Mann (4:16.74) and Joanna Evans (4:18.73) rounded out the heat.

Sierra Schmidt dominated the B final, touching in 4:12.97.

Men’s 400 Freestyle

Michael McBroom had to put up a serious fight to walk away with the 400 freestyle title in Mesa tonight. McBroom finished in 3:49.04 with two swimmers on his tail. Conor Dwyer touched second in 3:49.90 while Clark Smith finished in 3:49.96.

Jordan Wilimovsky finished fourth in 3:51.64. Ous Mellouli was fifth in 3:53.89.

Christian Quintero (3:55.22), Marcelo Acosta (3:55.32), and Matias Koski (3:59.41) completed the A final.
