2015 USA Swimming Summer Junior Nationals: Day 3 Finals Live Recap

Women’s 400 freestyle

Taylor Ruck of Scottsdale Aquatics swam away with this event from the start. The early leader took the event in 4:13.84, only .3 off of her best. It was a tight race for second as Tennessee Aquatics’ Erica Laning bested Santa Clara’s Sarah Shimomura 4:15.77 to 4:15.82. All eight swimmers in the A final achieved Olympic Trials cuts, including: Amanda Nunan (4:16.09), Kahra Williams (4:17.28), Joy Field (4:17.75), Karling Hemstreet (4:17.89) and Jennifer Campbell (4:17.95).

The B final was dominated by Anya Egorova of Gulliver Swim Club from start to finish. She clocked an Olympic Trials qualifying time with her swim of 4:16.88. Sophie Cattermole of Sarasota YMCA won the C final with a time of 4:17.77, also achieving an Olympic Trials cut and best time.

Men’s 400 freestyle

Nitro Swimming placed first and second in the men’s 400 free with Sean Grieshop (3:52.60) and Chris Yeager (3:54.14). Grieshop’s strong back half propelled him to victory and a best time. Parks Jones (3:56.13), Aaron Apel (3:56.78), Trey Freeman (3:56.92), Cole Buese (3:57.34), Brendan Meyer (3:59.45) and James Murphy (4:00.37) rounded out the A final.

Tennessee’s Walker Higgins swam a blazing 3:54.02 to take the B final. Walker came into this meet at 4:01.74, swam a 3:58.57 to qualify for Olympic Trials in the morning session, then dropped four more seconds at night. Higgins lead the race from start to finish. SwimAtlanta’s Cody Bekemeyer won the C final in a best time of 3:57.30.

Women’s 100 fly

Three women broke the 1:00 barrier in the A final. All Star Aquatics’ Caroline McTaggart got her hands on the wall first in 59.47, followed by Bailey Nero (59.62) and Ella Eastin (59.80). Victoria Edwards (1:00.04), Madeline Banic (1:00.21), Mackenzie Rumrill (1:00.23), Tevyn Waddell (1:00.34) and Remedy Rule (1:00.70) placed fourth through eighth in the event.

SwimAtlanta’s Haley McInerny took the B final in 1:00.39, while Walnut Creek Aquatics’ Brittany Usinger won the C final in 1:00.06.

Men’s 100 fly

The highlight of the night came from the A final of this event, as Michael Andrew swam a 52.57 to break the 15-16 National Age Group Record and meet record. The previous NAG was 52.75 set by Justin Lynch in 2013. Andrew was just off the World Junior Record of 52.52. Andrew went out in a 24.36, .14 seconds faster than he did in his prelim swim.

Maxime Rooney got the silver in this event with a time of 53.40. He was followed by Mathias Oh and Michael Thomas who tied for third in 53.84. Alex Valente (54.11), Ariel Spektor (54.58), Cameron Craig (55.06) and Mark Jurek (55.07) rounded out the top eight finishers.

Will MacMillan swam a 54.73 to win the B final, while Kyle Grissom went a 54.18 to take the C final. Both swims were Olympic Trials Cuts.

Men’s 800 free relay

The team of Cole Buese, Coleman Stewart, Billy Cadigan and Daniel Golczewski from the North Baltimore Aquatic Club took home the gold in this event with a time of 7:31.58. Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics took the silver in 7:33.26.

Sarasota YMCA had both their A and B relays place in the top 8. The team of Austin KatzDanny ErlenmeyerEmanuele Rossi and Hans Schroeder placed third in 7:33.84, while Drew ClarkCarter Page, Jackson Defore and Matthew Garcia finished eighth with a time of 7:40.01.
