2015 NCAA Division II Championships: Queens Takes Lead in Both Men’s, Women’s Races

Queens (Charlotte) put on a show on day three as both its men’s and women’s squads finished the day at the NCAA Division II Championships with leads.

Meanwhile, Nova Southeastern’s Anton Lobanov absolutely smoked the 100-yard breast en route to moving to sixth all time in the event’s history.

The Queens women pushed their advantage to 422.5-356.5 over defending champions Drury. Wingate (248), Nova Southeastern (180) and UCSD (159) rounded out the top five.

The men’s race is a lot closer and will likely come down to the wire. Queens leads defending champions Drury, 316.5-302.5.

Lindenwood (270), Grand Valley (230) and Wayne State (223) are the other teams that have cleared 200 points.

Women’s 500 free

Queen’s Patricia Castro Ortega collected her third NCAA D2 title of the meet as she smashed the NCAA D2 record and field in the 500-yard free.

Having already won the 200-yard IM and 200-yard free, Castro Ortega charged her way to a 4:43.37 in the 500-yard freestyle finale.

That swim thumped the previous record of 4:45.69 set by Southern Connecticut State’s Kristen Frost back in 2008.

Queens also went 1-2 with Lillian Gordy taking second in 4:50.70, while Drury went 3-4-7.

Allie Reynolds (4:52.07), Sarah Pullen (4:53.33) and Megan Ouhl (4:53.68) all scored for the defending champions.

Queens led 329.5-300.5 following the event.

Men’s 500 free

Queens swept the 500 frees as Nick Arakelian overtook West Chester’s Victor Polyakov for the men’s 500-yard freestyle title this evening.

Trailing with 100-yards to go, Arakelian managed to win, 4:20.98 to 4:21.25. Both swims beat the previous NCAA D2 mark of 4:21.48 set by Wingate’s Iaroslav Denysenko back in 2012.

That’s Arakelian’s third victory of the meet already with wins in the 1000-yard free and 400-yard IM.

Florida Southern’s Juan Tolosa rounded out the top three in 4:24.32.

Queens led Drury following the event, 231.5-213.

It took her until the final touch, but Drury’s Katya Rudenko got the job done against defending champion Mary Hanson of Cal Baptist. Rudenko managed to down Hanson, 52.75 to 52.88.

Both were a bit shy of Hanson’s NCAA D2 mark of 52.45 from last year.

Carson-Newman’s Natalie Burnett hit the wall third in 54.27, while Queens’ Hannah Peiffer snagged fourth overall in 54.55.

Queens remained in the lead, 345.5-320.5, against Drury.

Men’s 100 back

Lindenwood, which qualified 1-2-3 this morning, dropped the hammer in the men’s 100-yard backstroke with a 1-2-5 finish.

Krzysztof Jankiewicz put up an NCAA D2 record with a 46.65 for the win. That swim beat the 46.77 teammate Serghei Golban posted this morning.

Jakub Jonczyk placed second for Lindenwood with a 46.90, while Golban wound up fifth in 47.39.

Carson-Newman’s Catalin Ungur took third overall in 47.02.

Drury has two A finalists with Sean Feher (47.04) and Jordi Montseny Diez (47.51) taking fourth and eighth to move the defending champs ahead of Queens, 239-235.5.

Lynn’s Rebecca Matthews put on a show as she went out fast and kept with the pace to win the title in 1:01.03.

Cal-Penn’s Jade Arganbright finished second overall in 1:02.35 with Cal Baptist’ts Alena Rumiantceva snaring third in the finale with a time of 1:02.38.

Neither Queens nor Drury had a scoring swim in the event, so Queens remained in the lead, 345.5-320.5.

Nova Southeastern’s Anton Lobanov threw down an epic time of 51.63 to move to sixth all time in the event’s history.

Lobanov’s time not only crushed the NCAA D2 record of 52.43 set by Tampa’s Aleksander Hetland back in 2009, it also tied Lobanov with Nolan Koon for sixth ever in the event.

Wayne State’s Piotr Jachowicz took second in 52.74 with Queens’ Nic Erksson snaring third overall in 52.85.

Queens took a slight 256.5-255.5 lead over Drury following the amazing event.

Women’s 200 fly

Queens had a huge event with a 1-2 finish from Hannah Peiffer (1:59.06) and McKenzie Stevens (1:59.56) as the squad put some distance between them and Drury.

Queens pushed its lead to 382.5-322.5 at the end of the 200 fly.

LIU Post’s Joyce Kwok wound up third overall in 1:59.65 as the only other swimmer under 2:00.

Men’s 200 fly

Queens’ Matt Josa claimed his third individual NCAA D2 record of the meet as he topped the 200-yard fly in 1:42.96.

While not as impressive as his stunning swims in the 100 fly and 200 IM, Josa still managed to take down the NCAA D2 record of 1:42.99 set by Drury’s Jun Han Kim in 2011.

Nova Southeastern’s Thiago Sickert hit the wall second tonight in 1:44.42 with Grand Valley’s Gianni Ferrero taking a close third in 1:44.52.

Queens held a slight 276.5-268.5 led heading into the diving break.

Men’s One-Meter Diving

Clarion’s Collin Vest took home the men’s one-meter diving crown with 564.25 points, while Grand Valley’s Tyler Keelean placed second with 558.55 points. Wayne State’s Dylan Szegedi rounded out the top three with a 547.50.

Neither Queens nor Drury scored in diving, so Queens lead 276.5-268.5 heading into the 800 free relays.

Women’s 800 free relay

Queens put an exclamation mark on an amazing day of swimming by obliterating the NCAA D2 record in the 800 free relay.

The foursome of Patricia Castro Ortega (1:46.70), Lillian Gordy (1:48.43), McKenzie Stevens (1:49.89) and Caroline Arakelian (1:49.67) threw down a sizzling time of 7:14.69.

That performance cleared the previous record by a long shot as Drury set the mark with a 7:20.08 just a year ago.

Drury mitigated some of the team-point scoring damage by taking second as Leah Reed, Janet Yu, Kay Gieseke and Sarah Pullen took second in 7:20.44.

UCSD’s Julia Toronczak, Maddy Huttner, Dari Watkins and Natalie Tang placed third in 7:22.44.

Queens will go into the final day of competition with a 422.5-356.5 lead.

Men’s 800 free relay

Queens made sure it entered the final day of competition with a lead in the men’s race as well.

Nick Arakelian (1:36.13), Ben Taylor (1:37.20), Hayden Kosater (1:37.20) and Matt Josa (1:35.76) powered their way to an NCAA D2 record of 6:26.29.

That performance undercut Florida Southern’s 2012 record of 6:27.73.

Drury’s Samuel Olson, Luka Matacin, Joan Montseny Diez and Sean Feher finished second in 6:29.22 with Nova Southeastern’s Marco Aldabe, Thiago Sickert, Javier Caballero and Shane Kleinbeck claiming third in 6:30.09.

Queens goes into the last day of action with a 316.5-302.5 lead over Drury.

Lobanov’s a ringer if ever there was.

Guy’s been on Russian national teams in past and it totally violates the spirit of coompetition for him to swim in DIi. Has that Nova Southeastern coach no shame?

Can’t disagree more Bill. My daughter has a roommate from Spain and I can only speak from our experience but she’s a much better swimmer from the experience. What she’s accomplished in the past 3 days I directly attribute to her having to chase her friend in the pool day in and day out.
