Men’s 400 free finals

USA’s Grant Shoults turned in the fourth-ranked swim in the world by an 18-and-under swimmer this year when he won the men’s 400-meter free at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.

Shoults won the race wire-to-wire as he went out fast and continued to build on his victorious race with a time of 3:48.91.

That’s the fourth-best swim by an 18-and-under this year, and second-best by an American behind Townley Haas (3:48.69).

China grabbed the rest of the podium spots.

Yang Jintong raced his way to a 3:50.05 for the silver, while top-seeded Qiu Ziao wound up falling back to bronze in 3:50.99.

Australia’s Joshua Parrish (3:51.00), Great Britain’s Cameron Kurle (3:51.02), Mexico’s Ricardo Vargas (3:53.39), USA’s Matthew Hirschberger (3:54.09) and Venezuela’s Rafael Davila (3:54.67) also competed in the finals.

Women’s 50 breast semis

Turkey’s Viktoria Zeynep Gunes unleashed a sixth-ranked time in the women’s 50-meter breast semis at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.

Gunes threw down a 30.55 in semifinal 2 to lead the way into the championship finale tomorrow.

That time vaulted her to sixth in the world rankings as she continues to climb the rankings in the event.

Sweden’s Sophie Hansson lead the rest of the field as Gunes looks to be a shoo-in for the gold.  Hansson qualified second in 31.32 with Great Britain’s Katie Matts claiming the third seed in 31.60.

USA’s Nikol Popov (31.72) and Kennedy Lohman (31.87) qualified fourth and fifth.

Australia’s Ella Bond (31.92), Japan’s Yukino Miyasaka (32.04) and Russia’s Maria Astashkina (32.26) also made the finale.

Men’s 100 back semis

Romania’s Robert Glinta lowered the meet record in the men’s 100-meter back semis at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.

Glinta clocked a top-seeded time of 54.56 in the second semifinal of the night.

That performance lowered the meet record of 54.74 set by Michael Taylor of the USA during prelims, and moved Glinta closer to Apostolos Christou’s World Junior Record of 54.03 from last summer.

That’s also the fifth-ranked 18-and-under swim this year according to USA Swimming Stats.

Taylor bettered his prelim time as well with a second-seeded 54.62, while Michael Andrew of the U.S. put up a third-seeded effort of 54.74.

Great Britain’s Luke Greenbank and Egypt’s Youssef Abdalla tied for fourth with matching 54.93s as the only other sub-55s of the night.

Spain’s Hugo Gonzalez (55.01), Canada’s Markus Thormeyer (55.03) and Javier Acevedo (55.24) also earned spots in the finale.

Women’s 400 IM finals

Great Britain had a huge 1-2 finish in the women’s 400-meter IM as Rosie Rudin led the way with a meet record at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.

Rudin topped the finale for gold with a time of 4:39.01 to break Ella Eastin’s meet record of 4:40.02 from the 2013 edition in Dubai.

Rudin’s teammate Georgia Coates also cleared the previous meet mark with a silver-winning time of 4:39.94.

Spain’s Africa Zamorano rounded out the podium with a bronze-winning effort of 4:40.15 in what proved to be a swift finale.

The top two swims are among the top five swims by 18-and-unders this year according to USA Swimming Stats.

Although the official results have Rudin breaking a World Junior record, it’s not even close to the fastest time in the age group.  Zhou Min of China put up a 4:35.69 at the 2014 Chinese Nationals as the currently unratified World Junior record for 17-and-unders amongst the women.

USA’s Brooke Forde, the daughter of popular Yahoo Sports columnist Pat Forde, was the best of the rest with a fourth-place effort of 4:43.20.

Serbia’s Anja Crevar (4:43.36), Italy’s Ilaria Cusinato (4:44.84), USA’s Savanna Faulconer (4:47.82) and Japan’s Hiroko Makino (4:48.05) finished fifth through eighth in the finale.

Men’s 100 breast semis

Russia’s Anton Chupkov cruised to the top seed in the men’s 100-meter breast finals at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.

After setting a World Junior record in prelims with a sizzling 1:00.12 to move to 20th in the world rankings, Chupkov checked in with a 1:00.34 for the top seed heading into tomorrow’s finals.

USA’s Michael Andrew, in his second swim of the night, nearly broke his 15-16 U.S. National Age Group record of 1:00.68 with a second-ranked swim of 1:00.78.

Lithuania’s Andrius Sidlauskas qualified third overall in 1:00.83 as the only other sub-1:01 of the night.

Along with Carsten Vissering (1:00.86), the top three are among just four 18-and-unders to have broken 1:01 this year.

USA’s Reece Whitley claimed the fourth seed in 1:01.52 with Australia’s Matthew Wilson snaring fifth in 1:01.81.

Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi (1:01.95), Great Britain’s Charlie Attwood (1:01.96) and Belgium’s Basten Caerts (1:01.99) also grabbed transfer spots into the championship heat.

Women’s 100 back semis

Australia’s Minna Atherton nearly downed her meet record during semis of the women’s 100-meter back at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.

Atherton clocked a top time of 59.86, just off her meet mark of 59.83 from prelims.

That time is currently listed as a World Junior record, but is well short of the unratified top time of 59.58 posted by Claire Adams of the U.S. at USA Nationals earlier this month.

Just five swimmers 18-and-under have broken 1:00 this year.

Canada’s Danielle Hanus (1:00.75), Russia’s Irina Prikhodko (1:00.80) and New Zealand’s Bobbi Gichard (1:00.88) also broke 1:01 to make the finale.

New Zealand’s Gabrielle Fa’Amausili (1:01.15) and USA’s Grace Ariola (1:01.42) snagged the finale two spots in finals tomorrow.

Men’s 400 free relay finals

Australia proved to be too consistently good across the board en route to gold in the men’s 400-meter freestyle relay at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.

Vincent Dai, Kyle Chalmers, Brayden McCarthy and Jack Cartwright won the finale in 3:17.39 with Chalmers leading the way with a strong 48.41 second leg.

Team USA’s Ryan Hoffer, Daniel Kruger, Michael Jensen and Maxime Rooney finished second with a time of 3:18.42.

Italy’s Alessandro Bori, Giovanni Izzo, Ivano Vendrame and Alessandro Miressi placed third in 3:18.58.

Women’s 800 free relay finals

Australia swept the relay events on the first day as the Dolphins claimed the women’s 800-meter free relay at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.

Tamsin Cook, Lucy Elizabeth McJannett, Shayna Jack and Gemma Cooney won the event in a meet-record time of 7:56.68.  That swim crushed the 7:59.42 meet record set by Team USA in 2013 that also stood as the World Junior record.

Cook’s leadoff leg of 1:58.16 set the meet record in the women’s 200-meter free.

Canada’s Penny Oleksiak, Rebecca Smith, Mary-Sophie Harvey and Taylor Ruck took silver in 7:57.04.

Russia’s Arina Openysheva, Daria Mullakaeva, Valeriia Salamatina and Anastassia Kirpichnikova grabbed bronze in a time of 7:57.58.

USA’s Lauren Case, Melissa Pish, Tatum Wade and Hannah Cox wound up fourth in 7:57.84.
