Joshua Thai Sets 1-Meter Record as Carpinteria, California Win CIF Southern Section D4 Titles

After the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) delayed sports through the fall, the 2021 CIF Southern Section Division 4 State Championships were held on May 29 at Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

The highlight of the meet came on the boards, where Joshua Thai of Alhambra won the 1-meter event in a final score of 646.75. His score was over 100 points ahead of the runner-up, and best the previous record by 10 points set by Jacob Fielding in 2015.

BOYS MEET

Top 5 Team Scores:

  1. Carpinteria – 223
  2. California – 208
  3. Bishop Montgomery – 178
  4. Calabasas – 168
  5. Pacifica-Oxnard/Aquinas – 120

Bishop Montgomery began the boys’ meet by winning the 4×50 medley relay in 1:45.17. Calabasas won the 4×50 free relay in 1:32.79, while California ended the meet with a victory in the 4×100 free relay with a final time of 3:28.00.

A pair of freshman picked up individual wins throughout the meet. Freshman Oscar Cruz of California won the 200 IM in 2:01.34, while Quin Seider of Nordhoff earned the gold medal in the 100 fly with a time of 52.80.

There were two double-event winners: Calabasas’ Jaden Ficklen won the 200 free (1:40.75) and the 100 free (46.86), while River Springs’ Tyler LeDet claimed the 50 free (21.33) and 100 back (50.74).

Other event winners included Campbell Hall’s Jake Pollard in the 500 free (4:44.91) as well as Northview’s Daniel Reyes in the 100 breast (1:01.93).

GIRLS MEET

California dominated the meet, starting their winning ways by posting a four-second victory in the 4×50 medley relay in 1:57.54. They also won the 4×100 free relay by nine seconds in 3:49.68, while Trustin claimed the 4×50 free relay in 1:49.29.

California freshman Kai Izquierdo posted victories in the 200 free (1:58.91) and 500 free (5:11.59) by substantial margins. Her teammate and classmate Hanna LaBrada clinched wins in the 200 IM (2:13.28) and 100 fly (58.09).

Other event winners included Charter Oak’s Kathryn Simpson in both the 50 free (24.47) and 100 free (53.33), Summit’s Chelsea Fascio in the 100 back (1:01.02), and St. Monica Academy’s Adelle Brush in the 100 breast (1:08.73).

On the boards, Campbell Hall’s Dara Reyblat was the only competitor, posting a final score of 410.05 on the 1-meter.
