Anna Hopkin Swims to Fastest 100 Free in NCAA at Missouri Invitational; Missouri Wins

Arkansas sprinter Anna Hopkin struck again on Friday, rocketing the fastest time in the NCAA this season in the 100 free at the Missouri Invitational.

Hopkin, from Great Britain, won the 100-yard free in 46.56, crushing the field by more than two seconds. Missouri’s Amy Feddersen finished second in 48.97. It was her third win of the meet after launching strong races in the 50 free and 200 free.

Arkansas’ Peyton Palsha won the 1650 free in 16:21.88, winning her third event of the meet.

The No. 3/9 Mizzou men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept the 2019 Mizzou Invite team titles on Friday after notching four NCAA A cuts and setting three school records during the three-day meet at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.

The Tiger women scored 942.5 points to win the women’s title ahead of 12 other programs. Arkansas (659) placed second, San Diego State (585) took third, Nebraska (384) was fourth and BYU (354) rounded out the top five. On the men’s side, the Tigers totaled 1,253.5 points to take first among seven total teams. BYU (816) finished second, Drury (671.5) was third, Wyoming (495) took fourth and Oklahoma Baptist (228) placed fifth.

Missouri went 1-2-3 in the 200 back behind Sarah Thompson (1:52.88), Meredith Rees (1:54.48) and Jennifer King (1:55.18). The Missouri men notched a 1-2-3 in the same event behind Jack Dahlgren (1:41.66), Nick Alexander (1:41.76) and Daniel Hein (1:42.62).

Thompson, Haley Hynes, Megan Keil and Feddersen won the 400 free relay in 3:14.88, two hundredths ahead of Arkansas’ Kobie Melton, Hopkin, Molly Moore and Emma Hultquist (3:14.90).

Missouri’s Jack Dubois won the 1650 free in 15:05.03. Katrina Brathwaite won the 200 breast in 2:10.89 and Will Goodwin won the men’s event in 1:55.29. Micah Slaton won the 200 butterfly in 1:42.30, nearly four seconds ahead of the field.

Swimming unattached, Mikel Schreuders won the 100 freestyle (43.12) ahead of Missouri’s Danny Kovac (43.19).

Nebraska’s Madison Coughlen won the 200 butterfly in 1:57.39.

Josue Dominguez broke the longest-standing BYU swim record in the 200-yard breaststroke after 21 years. Dominguez bumped himself from No. 2 to No. 1 in BYU’s school records in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:55.97 to finish second.

But for the third night in a row, the spotlight was on Anna Hopkin.
