Katinka Hosszu Leads First Morning of the Beijing World Cup

Katinka Hosszu led the first session of the Beijing World Cup with two top seeds going into Day One finals. Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson and Hosszu’s Hungarian teammate Boglarka Kapas will also be making multiple appearances in the first night of finals. The host country of China also thoroughly dominated, putting multiple swimmers through to every final.

Women’s 100 Backstroke

In the first event of this World Cup stop, Katinka Hosszu easily swam to the top seed of the women’s 100 backstroke with a time of 58.03. She was followed by Japan’s Sakaya Akase for second in 58.62. China’s Jie Chen finished third with a time of 58.83.

Fourteen year old Xuwei Peng of China placed fourth in 59.16. Maaike De Waard of the Netherlands was fifth in 59.26, while Australia’s Amy Forrester touched sixth in 59.44.

Seventh place went to China’s Lihang Jiang in 59.53. Germany’s Lisa Graf rounded out the top eight for the final in 59.73.

Men’s 200 Freestyle

China’s Xinjie Ji took the top seed in the first men’s event, the 200 freestyle, with a time of 1:44.86. Australian Cameron McEvoy touched second behind him in 1:45.32, just ahead of France’s Clement Mignon, who was third in 1:45.39.

New Zealand’s Matthew Stanley came in fourth in 1:45.50. Fifth place went to Ziao Qiu of China in 1:45.75. Qiu just out touched Alexander Graham of Australia, who was sixth in 1:45.76.

Hungary’s Daniel Dudas finished seventh in a time of 1:45.81, while Kyle Stolk of the Netherlands was eighth in 1:45.94.

Women’s 50 Breaststroke

Alia Atkinson of Jamaica led the women’s 50 breaststroke prelims by over half a second, finishing first in a time of 29.95. She was the only swimmer under the 30 second barrier, with second place finisher Ran Suo of China touching in 30.50.

Third place went to another Chinese swimmer, Junyang Feng, in 30.78. Jingyao Yu, also of China, placed fourth in 30.92. Rikke Pedersen of Denmark followed in fifth in 30.99.

China’s Jinglin Shi came in sixth in 31.17, just out touching her fellow countrywoman Jiaying Zhang. Zhang was seventh in 31.18. Eighth place went to Taipei’s Pei Wun Lin in 31.27.

Men’s 200 Breaststroke

The top seed in the men’s 200 breaststroke went to Australia’s Matthew Wilson. Wilson touched first in a time of 2:04.22, leading the field by over two seconds. China’s Haiyang Qin was second in 2:06.54, while Belarus’s Ilya Shymanovich came in third in 2:07.10.

Russia’s Kirill Prigoda finished fourth in 2:07.17. Fifth place went to China’s Zibei Yan in 2:07.73. Yan’s teammate, Feilian Mao, was just behind in 2:07.74.

Two more Chinese swimmers rounded out the top eight. Lizhuo Wang was seventh in 2:09.23, and Zhihao Zhang was eighth in 2:09.50.

Women’s 400 Freestyle

The Chinese women dominated the 400 freestyle prelims. Fifteen year old Jianjiahe Wang led the race in 4:05.48, a second ahead of second place finisher, Jie Dong. Dong finished in 4:06.69.

Third place went to Caiping Yang in 4:08.36. Hungary’s Boglarka Kapas, the lone swimmer in tonight’s final not from China, placed fourth in 4:09.31. Xin Xin finished fifth in 4:11.40.

Duo Shen came in sixth in 4:11.86. Seventh place went to Ruining Guo in 4:13.40, while Xiaohan Liu was eighth in 4:13.50.

Men’s 50 Backstroke

Pavel Sankovich of Belarus narrowly led the men’s 50 backstroke preliminaries, finishing first in 23.38. China’s Jiayu Xu was second in 23.42. Japan’s Ryosuke Irie placed third in 23.74.

Israeli Zhuravl Toumarkin took fourth place in 23.77. A second Japanese swimmer, Maaski Kaneko, touched fifth in 23.90.

Sixth place went to Australia’s Bobby Hurley in 23.92. Hurley was followed by Germany’s Christian Diener for seventh in 23.94. Junya Koga of Japan rounded out the top eight in 23.95.

Women’s 100 Individual Medley

Hosszu claimed her second top seed of the morning, this time touching first in the women’s 100 IM in 58.21. She finished a full second ahead of Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden, who was the runner-up in 59.29. Japan’s Runa Imai was third in 59.73.

Korea’s Seoyeong Kim placed fourth in 59.77, while China’s Sishi Zhang came in fifth in 59.82. Shiwen Ye, also of China, was sixth in 1:00.11.

Atkinson bounced back from the 50 breast to take seventh in 1:00.51. Twelve year old Yichun Wang of China finished eighth in 1:00.60.

Men’s 400 Individual Medley

Michael Andrew of the United States finished first in the slower heats of the men’s 400 IM with a time of 4:13.39. Ukraine’s Mykhailo Romanchuk placed second in 4:15.62, while another American, Christopher Jhong, was third in 4:17.25.

Chinese swimmers rounded out the rest of the top eight. Yiwu Yan came in fourth in 4:20.94. Shuchang Zhou touched in 4:23.70 for fifth.

Sixth place went to Huafeng Wang in 4:31.96. Yu Zhou took seventh place in 4:32.05, and Weihua Xiong was eighth in 4:44.12. The top eight seeds in the event will swim tonight.

Women’s 200 Butterfly

Australia’s Christina Licciardi claimed the top seed for tonight’s final in the women’s 200 butterfly, touching first in a time of 2:09.48. China’s Yufei Zhang followed in 2:10.55 for second. Yerin Park of Korea placed third in 2:11.31.

Alexandra Wenk of Germany finished fourth in 2:11.38. Jing Liu of China was fifth in 2:11.75.

Hungary’s Boglarka Kapas came in sixth in 2:14.83, while China’s Ying Meng took seventh in 2:15.16. Eighth place went to China’s Siqi Wang in 2:15.28.

Men’s 100 Butterfly

Yauhen Tsurkin of Belarus finished first in the men’s 100 butterfly in 51.59. China’s Peng Wang was second in 51.66. Hong Kong’s Kenneth To touched third in 51.87.

Fourth place went to China’s Jiayu Xu in 51.97, while Pavel Sankovich was fifth in 52.03. Japan’s Shinri Shioura took sixth in 52.09.

Jiahao Shen of China placed seventh in 52.47. Xiaojing Zheng, also of China, was eighth in 52.61.

Women’s 50 Freestyle

Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands narrowly beat out Australia’s Cate Campbell to claim the top spot in the women’s 50 freestyle final. Kromowidjojo finished in 23.89, while Campbell touched in 23.92.

Third place went to China’s Menghui Zhu in 24.16. Denmark’s Pernille Blume was fourth in 24.32. Bronte Campbell claimed fifth in 24.44.

China’s Xiang Liu finished sixth in 24.51. Yichun Wang and Yue Wu, both of China, tied in 24.66 for seventh to round out the night’s final.
