Boston College Creating Equal Opportunities? -- June 19, 1998
In an attempt to provide equal scholarship opportunities for men and women participating in the school's 33 varsity sports, Boston College athletic director Gene DeFilippo unveiled a five-year strategic plan calling for the addition of 47 scholarships to various women's programs and the elevation of women's rowing to varsity status.
To implement the proposed changes, DeFilippo indicated that BC plans to find 38 new scholarships and draw the remaining nine from 11 of the 14 existing men's programs. But he stressed that the football, basketball and ice hockey programs would not be affected. In addition, three men's varsity sports - lacrosse, water polo, and wrestling - would be reduced to club-level status by the 2002-03 academic year, when BC hopes to field 31 varsity sports (14 for men, 17 for women) with virtually equal scholarships.
