KUALA LAMPUR, Malaysia, June 24. SINGAPORE's Joscelin Yeo set two meet records on the first day of the Malaysian Invitational Open Swimming Championships at the Kuala Lumpur Swimming Complex in Cheras today. In all, six meet marks bit the dust.
Meet records were set in the men's 100m freestyle, 400m medley and women's 50m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, 100m freestyle and 400m medley.
Yeo, a graduate of the University of Texas, won two gold medals, breaking meet standards in the 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke. Athens-bound, Yeo destroyed the previous 100m freestyle record of 59.47 seconds set by Piyaporn Tantinti of Thailand in 2002 in a time of 57.86. The second and third place finishers were also well under the old mark. In the 100m breaststroke Yeo broke the 14-year record of 1.15.28 set by Sarawak's Jong Su Ting with a time of 1.13.02.
Yeo said she was swimming through this meet to concentrate on Athens: "I did not think of winning gold. The whole (Singaporean) team is here basically as part of the training regime we are following and to practice and improve on our speed."
In the men's 100m freestyle, Allen Ong of Perak broke his previous record of 51.97 set in 2000 by clocking 51.73. Allen, who already has qualified for the Olympics, said he is competing in the championships to better his personal best and as warm-up before Athens.
In the 400m individual medley Selangor's Khoo Cai Lin destroyed the field with a meet record 5.01.99, 16 seconds faster than the runner-up.
