Western Illinois, Northern Iowa vs. Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa, February 4. THE University of Iowa men's swimming and diving team hosted Western Illinois for the final home and dual meet of the season. The Hawkeyes recognized eight seniors at the meet as they ended their dual meet careers as Hawkeyes. Iowa defeated Western Illinois 68-22.

The Hawkeyes kicked-off the meet by dominating the 400 medley relay event. Iowa's top team touched the wall first at 3:26.09. Iowa's ‘B' relay took second with a time of 3:27.24. The Hawkeyes also took third and fourth.

Following the relays, the Hawkeyes swept the 200 free. Freshman Manuel Belzer touched the wall first at 1:41.96 and senior Max Dittmer came in second with a time of 1:42.02. Freshmen Gianni Sesto and Charlie Hogan finished third (1:42.80) and fourth (1:44.29), respectively.

Freshman Tyler Lentz placed first in the 100 IM with a time of 52.69, while freshman Kyle Noser finished in second (53.66). Sophomore Jordan Huff went on to place first in the 50 free, touching the wall first at 21.05.

After the first intermission, freshman Dustin Rhoads was victorious in the 50 fly. Rhoads posted a time of 22.60 for first-place. Junior Duncan Partridge, Sesto and sophomore Patrick Wegiand finished first, second and third in the 100 free. Partridge claimed first with a time of 45.36, while Sesto and Weigand posted times of 46.98 and 48.14, respectively.

Iowa won the last three individual events of the night. Freshman Devon Meeks finished first in the 50 back with a time of 24.24. Sophomore Paul Gordon took first-place in the 500 (4:31.67), freshman Andrew Marciniak won the 50 breast with a time of 26.76.

The Hawkeyes concluded the meet with a victory in the 200 free relay. The team of senior Zane Hugo, freshman Max Behles, junior Ryan Phelan and Gordon touched the wall in first with a time of 1:24.26.

The Hawkeyes will return to action Feb. 23-26 when they travel to Minneapolis, MN for the Big Ten Championships.

The Hawkeyes kicked-off the meet with first and second-place finishes in the 400 medley relay. The quartet of senior Katarina Tour, freshmen Karolina Wartalowicz and Abbey Tuchscherer and senior Caitie Polz touched the wall in first with a time of 3:54.47. Iowa's ‘B' team placed second (4:02.41).

Following the relays, Iowa swept the 200 free taking the top four spots. Freshman Emily Christiansen took the top spot with a time of 1:55.05, while freshman teammate Taylor Newgaard finished in second at 1:57.09. Sophomore Lauren Eytalis placed third (1:58.00) and freshman Aiste Dobrovolskaite took fourth (1:58.11).

Freshmen Haley Gordon, Emily Hovren, and Lauren Drennan finished first, second and third in the 100 IM with times of 59.90, 1:02.32 and 1:02.58, respectively. In the next event, freshman Elise Borja posted a first-place finishing time of 24.25 in the 50 free.

After the first intermission, Dobrovolskaite claimed a first-place finish in the 50 fly with a time of 26.63. Tuchscherer placed second (26.74), while Drennan place third (26.92).

Iowa dominated the 100 free, claiming the top four spots. Polz took the top honor with a time of 52.53. Gordon touched the wall in second at 53.93, while seniors Verity Hicks and Caitlin Carlyle finished third (54.67) and fourth (55.02), respectively.

The Hawkeyes were victorious in the next three events. Junior Daniela Cubelic placed first in the 50 back at 26.20. Hovren took the top-spot in the 500 free (5:07.64), while Tour won the 50 breast (29.87).

Senior Hawkeye diver Deidre Freeman won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Freeman earned a score of 295.45 on the 1-meter and 334.35 on the 3-meter. Freshman Lauren Kelba placed second in both events with scores of 267.10 and 283.25, respectively, while sophomore Mary Sue Lemay placed fourth in both events.

The Hawkeyes concluded the meet with a victory in the 200 free relay. The team of senior Christine Mauro, Polz, Tour and Carlyle touched the wall first at1:38.95.

Iowa will return to action Feb. 16-19 when it heads to Bloomington, IN for the Big Ten Championships.
