USA Paralympic Swimming Trials: Jessica Long, Mallory Weggemann, Justin Zook Among World Record Setters on Day Two

BISMARCK, North Dakota, June 15. DAY One started off pretty fast with a handful of Paralympic world records yesterday, but today proved to be an undisputed scorcher at the 2012 USA Paralympic Swimming Trials. Jessica Long continued her remarkable meet with another set of world-record performances.

Jessica Long added another world record to her resume this week, upping her tally to four. A day after setting three records, she went 32.98, 1:10.77 in prelims of the women's S8 100 fly. Those swims bested the 50 fly (33.69) and 100 fly (1:11.14) global standards she already set. She returned in the finale with a winning time of 1:10.98 after going out in 33.66. USA Paralympics, however, later confirmed that Long had not applied to set 50 splits. Therefore, she will not get world record credit for the 32.98.

Mallory Weggemann, a former Swimming World Disabled Swimmer of the Year, just missed her American record of 1:23.17 with a winning 1:23.46 in the women's S7 100 back. Her 50 split of 39.16 did, however, best her American record of 40.23 from 2011, and undercut the world record of 39.54 set by Kirsten Bruhn back in 2010. Weggemann nearly grabbed a second world record with a 34.49 to win the women's S7 50 fly. That swim downed her American record of 34.56 set in Aug. 2011, but missed the global standard of 34.47 set by China's Huang Min at the 2008 Paralympics.

Elizabeth Stone cleared the American record in the women's 50 back in the S9 division with a 35.74 split in the 100 en route to a winning 1:13.66. That time lowered Stone's 36.04 from 2007. She bettered an American record in the women's S9 100 fly during finals with a 1:11.84, under her 1:12.16 from Aug. 2011.

Also during the morning session, Leslie Cichocki turned in a 1:18.77 in the women's S14 100 back to better her American record of 1:25.95 from Dec. 2011. She lowered the 200 back American record with a 2:59.31, under Lisa Elsener's 3:00.89 from way back in 1998. She also took down the 50 back American record with a 37.62 split in prelims to down her 40.56 from 2011. She returned in the evening with a 37.54 split.

During prelims, Kayla Wheeler tracked down the women's S1 50 fly world record of 1:47.98 she set in February at the Jimi Flowers meet by clocking a 1:38.49. She returned in the evening with an American record of 1:24.11 after clearing her standard with a 1:24.64 in the women's S1 50 freestyle event in prelims. Her previous record had been a 1:29.31 also at the Jimi. She then won the 50 fly with a 1:38.83.

Alyssa Gialamas knocked down the American record in the women's 50 free in the S5 division twice. First, she posted a 46.40 in prelims, before clocking a 45.77 in finals — both under the 47.22 she set in May.

A day after taking down a world record, Victoria Arlen clocked a 35.90 to win the women's S6 50 free. That swim erased Erin Popovich's 2000 Paralympic American record of 36.23. Letticia Martinez posted a 33.51 to break the women's S11 50 free American record of 33.94 she set in Nov. 2011.

Roy Perkins Jr. clipped his American record in the men's S5 50 free with a 34.41. His previous record had been a 34.45 set in Aug. 2010. Rafael Castillo twice lowered the American record in the men's S6 50 free with a 33.38, and 33.16 in prelims and finals. Both beat the 34.40 set by Kevin Sullivan in 1990. Evan Austin broke a tie for the men's S8 50 free American record with matching 31.12s by Tom Miazga and Austin. Today, Austin posted a 30.85 in prelims before earning a 30.06 in the finale. Tucker Dupree clocked a 24.56 in the men's S12 50 free, lowering the American record of 24.80 he set in 2011. Blake Adams followed with a 27.83 in the men's S13 50 free, besting the American record of 28.11 he set in 2011.

Jaide Childs cleared the women's S5 50 fly American record twice with a 53.63 and 51.59 in prelims and finals. That time bettered the 54.91 set by Jacque Mox in 2000.

During prelims, Justin Zook shot down a pair of S9 backstroke world records. Zook tracked down the 100-meter back global mark with a 1:01.75, clipping the 1:01.85 set by Matthew Cowdrey of Australia in 2010. Zook also posted a 29.73 on the way out, besting another Cowdrey global standard of 29.80 from 2007. Notably, Zook lowered American records by Jarrett Perry in the 50 (30.79) and 100 (1:03.47). During finals, Zook won the 100 back in 1:02.21 with a split of 30.00 at the 50. He then won the men's S9 50 free with an American record of 25.87 in the finale.

Richard Mazur lowered his American record in the men's S14 100 back with a 1:22.84. That swim cleared his 1:24.72 from 2001. During finals, he posted a 1:22.59 to lower the record even further.

Maegan Clark demolished her women's S4 American record in the 200 back with a 7:46.19. That time blasted the 8:26.64 she set at the GTAC meet in May of this year. Ryan McLean followed with a 4:28.21 in the women's S5 200 back, eclipsing her 4:33.02 American record from the Jimi Flowers meet.
