US Olympic Trials, Day 7 Prelims: Jenny, Kara Lynn Lead the Way in the 50 Free

LONG BEACH, Calif., July 13. JUST when you've counted her out, Jenny Thompson comes storming back.

Thompson, America's premier sprint queen for more than a decade, was relegated to fifth place in last night's 100 meter freestyle final. But this morning, the most decorated US female Olympian in history, threw down the gauntlet by qualifying first in the women's 50 free in 15.15, one-hundredth of a second ahead of Kara Lynn Joyce, winner of the 100 free..

Interestingly, at 31, Thompson is the oldest woman in the semifinal field of 16. The youngest woman, 16 year-old Dana Vollmer, qualifed 16th.

It took 26.12 to make the semifinals cut.

Masters swimmer Trina Radke, 33 – a 1988 Olympian in the 200 fly – just missed the cut, finishing 19th among the 46 entrants in a time of 26.22
Another Masters swimmer, 35 year-old Peggy Gross, was 34th in 26.58.

Among the notables missing the cut: Tammie Stone, 20th; Lacy Boutwell, 21st; Kim Harada, 22nd; Tanica Jamison, 23rd; Shelly Ripple-Johnston, 29th; and Christina Swindle, 42nd.

Sarah Wanezek qualified third, followed by Natalie Coughlin, Amanda weir and Maritza Correia.

Haley Cope was ninth and Colleen Lanne 13th.
