Swimming World Cactus Classic: Xavier Mohammed Doubles on First Night; Dennis Baker Sets FINA World Masters Mark

TEMPE/SCOTTSDALE, Arizona, May 22. THE first night of the Swimming World Magazine Cactus Classic featured timed finals over long course meters in the 400 free and 400 IM events. Sun Devil's Xavier Mohammed doubled up with a pair of victories.

Sun Devil's Xavier Mohammed won the men's 15 & over 400 free in 4:00.58. Teammate Adrian Kirkpatrick took second in 4:10.12 with Tyler Pennington taking third in 4:11.24. Notably, Dennis Baker, 47, of Mount Hood Aquatics placed sixth in 4:13.47. While Baker has a 4:09 to his credit, tonight's time cleared the FINA World Masters record in the 45-49 division as U.S. Masters Swimming sanctioned the event. The time beat Marcus Mattioli's 2006 standard of 4:14.81.

Mohammed swept the gold medals available on the first day with a 4:31.11 in the men's 15 & over 400 IM. Scottsdale's Robert Barrett finished second in 4:48.09 with BEST's Chris Webb taking third in 4:49.87.

Scottsdale's Lindsey Laporte claimed the women's 15 & over 400 freestyle in 4:31.25 with Emily Christiansen taking second in 4:33.65. Scottsdale's Claire Duckworth placed third in 4:35.61. Meanwhile, BEST's Christine Olson took the women's 15 & over 400 IM in 5:08.13. UWSF's Erica Stock claimed second in 5:10.68. Foothills' Mackenzie Stein touched third in 5:11.08.
