Sarah Sjostrom, from Sweden, was a little worried that she had false started in the prelims of the 100 butterfly at the FINA world championships. For part of the race, she thought her chances of defending her world title were over.

“I was a bit worried … because I thought I was moving before the signal, so I was really worried that this was my last 100 fly of this competition,” she said. Despite the concern, she posted a 56.47 to lead qualifiers into tonight’s semifinals.

Sjostrom swam in the final heat of the meet’s first event, not having much time to soak in the meet’s atmosphere. “The first race … you don’t know how to do it. You feel like it’s the first time you’re going to race.”

She said she’s encouraged by her technique in the swim, saying, “I tried to have a strong kick and doing everything from there. It was a surprise to see my time.”
