MESA – Ryan Hoffer had a standout meet at last weekend’s Arizona Division I high school swimming and diving championships, winning the 50 and 100 freestyles and helping Chaparral win the 200 medley relay with a stellar backstroke split.

The highlight of the meet was Hoffer’s 50 free, in which he lowered his year-old state record of 19.55 and recent lifetime best of 19.54 with a winning time of 19.53. The time was a U.S. national age group record, which Hoffer had set last December at the junior nationals with his 19.54. That also got the 16-year-old sophomore closer to Caeleb Dressel’s national high school record of 19.36.

In the video below, you will see Hoffer’s amazing underwater kicking skills in the splash-and-dash, which he uses to full effect as he stays submerged for the maximum allowed distance of 15 meters per length.
