Reigning Short Course World Champion Nicholas Santos Among 16 Brazilians On Worlds Roster

Nicholas Santos

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, September 9. BRAZIL will be looking to challenge the top of the medal table at this December’s short course world championships, sending 16 swimmers that could earn multiple medals in Doha based on swims at last week’s Jose Finkel Trophy meet.

Cesar Cielo and Felipe Silva will be looking to regain the short course world titles they won in 2010, while Nicholas Santos will attempt to defend his 50 fly world title from the 2012 meet. Cielo won the 50 free and 100 free in 2010, while Silva captured the 50 breast and was third in the 100 breast.

Four swimmers are awaiting the decision of a committee in regards to swimming in the women’s 100 fly and men’s 100 free. Daynara de Paula and Daiene Dias both posted times of 57.64 in the 100 fly, while Joao de Lucca and Henrique Martins tied with times of 47.33 in the 100 free (de Lucca in prelims, Martins in finals). Instead of a swimoff, a technical committee will decide who swims at short course worlds, as only two swimmers per country are allowed in any event.

De Lucca and Martins can take some consolation in knowing they are going to Qatar as a part of Brazil’s 400 free relay, no matter the outcome.

Thiago Pereira withdrew from the meet after securing a spot on the team in the 100 IM. He was told that he could enter another event if two people had not earned spots on the roster. That means he can’t swim in the 200 IM, but the 400 IM is open.

Thiago Simon and Etiene Medeiros will be the busiest Brazilians at the meet, with four individual events on their schedules.
