PALO ALTO, CA – Sophomore Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif. / Buena) and senior Bryan Jones (College Station, Texas / A&M Consolidated) each won two individual events to lead the third-ranked University of Texas men’s swimming and diving team to victory over defending NCAA runner-up and No. 1-ranked Stanford 138-105 at deGuerre Pool in Palo Alto, Calif., in the first dual meet action of the season for both squads.
Jones claimed first place in both the 50- (20.42) and 100-yard (44.78 – NCAA consideration) freestyle events, while Dumais swept both the one- and three-meter springboard diving competitions with NCAA Zone Diving qualifying scores of 346.65 and 395.70, respectively. Additionally, head coach Eddie Reese’s Longhorns swept the two relay events of the afternoon with the team of sophomore Tommy Hannan (Baltimore, Md. / Mount St. Joseph), senior Russell Chozick (Austin, Texas / Westlake), junior Nate Dusing (Villa Hills, Ky. / Covington Catholic) and Jones winning the 400-yard medley relay in an NCAA consideration time of 3:17.75, while the team of freshman Chris Kemp (Southlake, Texas / Ft. Worth Christian), sophomore Ryan Ciccarelli (Plainsboro, N.J. / West Windsor), junior Jamie Rauch (Houston, Texas / Cypress Creek), and Dusing scored another NCAA consideration time for the Longhorns with their 2:59.02 first-place performance in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Also contributing wins in individual events for Texas were senior Jon Younghouse (Cape Girardeau, Mo. / Cape Central), who won the 100-yard freestyle event; Dusing, who posted an NCAA consideration time of 1:47.67 in his 200-yard butterfly victory; and junior Matt Ulrickson (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Saguaro), who took first in the 200-yard backstroke.
In all, Texas captured nine of the thirteen events contested. The win gives Texas a 1-0 dual meet record, while Stanford falls to 0-1.
The Longhorns return to the pool on Saturday, November 6 at 1 p.m., when Texas travels to Berkeley, Calif., to take on sixth-ranked California.
