NCAA Div. I Men: Minnesota Leads Big 10; Michigan’s Thompson Clocks 4:16 for the 500

Minneapolis,MN. Feb. 22. THE HOST University of Minnesota took a commanding lead after the first day of competition at the Men's Big 10 Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis, despite winning only one event.

Minnesota leads the team scoring with 241 points, followed by Penn State with 170 and Michigan with 162.

Minnesota got the meet off to a satisfying start, winning the 200 freestyle reloay in 1:18.49, more than half a second ahead of Penn State.

Michigan, always strong in the distance events, answered with a one-two finish in the 500 yard freestyle. Chris Thompson, the Olympic bronze medalist and American record-holder in the 1500 meters, clocked 4:16.22 for the 500, the nation's fastest time this season. Teammate Dan Ketchum was a strong second at 4:17.65 with Minnesota's Justin Mortimer right behind (4:17.95).

The 200 IM was a tight battle all the way, with Penn State's Joe Peresan emerging the victor in 1:47.32. Wisconsin's Brenda Coyne touched just five-hundredths of a second later. Bob Molletierre made it two-in-a-row for the Nittany Lions when he won the 50 free in 19.80.

Tom Dvidson of Indiana won a close duel with Minnesota's Dan Croaston to take the one-meter diving in the day'sfinal event.
