GOLD COAST, Australia, August 20. MISSY Franklin spent Wednesday morning, the eve of the Pan Pacific championships, away from the Gold Coast Aquatic Center to recover from a back spasm that occurred during a routine practice Tuesday evening.

The extent of the injury was not immediately known, but it was severe enough for Franklin to miss Wednesday morning’s practice with Team USA and for USA Swimming to cancel her scheduled press conference. Franklin was resting in her hotel room as staff evaluated the situation.

Franklin is scheduled for four individual events at the Pan Pacific championships, with the three relays also likely on her program. Her first day might be her toughest, with the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke set for Thursday.

Updates on the situation will be posted when available.
