OAKVILLE, Ontario, Canada, September 23. IN an exclusive excerpt of the Swim Ontario Off The Deck vodcast, Oakville’s Evan White talks with Swimming World Canadian contributor Mike Thompson.
White talks about committing to Michigan, his part in the Canadian team for the World Junior Championships, as well as his thought regarding social media. He even talks about doing a 1000-kick every single practice.
White, who is ranked 11th in the Class of 2014 by CollegeSwimming.com, has had a sensational summer, including bettering his 15-17 Canadian Age Group record with a 2:00.31 in the men’s 200-meter IM at the FINA World Junior Championships in Dubai. That’s after he took down a three-decade-old age group record in the event during the Canadian World Championship Trials in April He first clocked a 2:02.38 in the event in Montreal, downing the former record set by Olympic gold medalist and overall Canadian legend Alex Baumann 32 years ago.
White also had a tremendous meet at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, one of the most prestigious junior meets in the country. He finished his meet with an astounding six gold medals and a bronze. He won individual titles in the 200 fly, 200 breast, 100 fly and 200 IM, as well as helped Team Ontario to victories in the 400 free relay and 400 medley relay. His only non-gold medal came by way of a third-place outing in the 400 IM.
At the Canadian Senior Nationals, he helped his Oakville squad to a rare outcome as the overall national team champions. Oakville powered to 707 points at the meet, winning the overall title as a non-university-affiliated program.
He’ll definitely be in good company with Michigan as the program has a distance tradition like almost no other team in the NCAA.
