American Matt Grevers is clearly a student of the sport of swimming, as evidenced by his actions after his semifinal swim in the 100 backstroke at the FINA world championships.

Though some athletes say they don’t pay attention to what others do in races, Grevers said he paid close attention to what was happening around him in his semifinal race, as well as what was transpiring in the second semifinal.

“It was really interesting watching the last heat and seeing how fast (Mitch) Larkin and (Camille) Lacourt went,” he said. “They both take it out fast, so I know what they have in their arsenal. So it’s good researching, a little recon there.”

Grevers is expecting a thrilling battle in tomorrow’s final, given the different race tactics all eight athletes will employ.

“That final is a big race,” he said. “Experience will come in handy a little bit there.”
