MINNEAPOLIS – Elizabeth Beisel and Tyler Clary each made some major moves up the points ladder tonight at the Arena Grand Prix in Minnesota. But, Kierra Smith and Beata Nelson each had some special sizzlers in store for the fans.

California’s Caitlin Leverenz turned in the second fastest 200 fly of her career with a 1:54.34.  That swim came up just short of her top time ever of 1:53.78 at the Georgia Fall Invitational back in 2011.

Stanford’s Maya DiRado picked up second overall in 1:54.97, which is right around her in-season best of 1:54.47 from the Art Adamson Invitational back in 2013.

Gator’s Elizabeth Beisel and Mission Viejo’s Katie McLaughlin tied for third-place honors with 1:55.15s.

Shannon Vreeland (1:56.96), Devin Ste. Marie (1:57.14), NBAC’s Becca Mann (1:57.68) and Minnesota’s Danielle Nack (1:57.94) also competed in the finale.

Minnesota’s Tori Simenec took the B final in 1:57.46 with Iowa Flyer Ruby Martin earning second in 1:57.58.

Kelsey Drake (2:00.35), Kay Sargent (2:01.63), Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou (2:02.04), Jessica Epps (2:02.62), Morgan Rosas (2:02.91) and Taylor Ault (2:03.80) also performed in the consolation heat.

Men’s 200 fly

It’s not often that an Olympic gold medalist gets to set lifetime bests in-season, but a yard meet in November was perfect for SwimMAC’s Tyler Clary.  Clary raced his way to a 1:44.73 for the win, beating his previous best of 1:45.44 from the 2009 Short Course Nationals.  That’s his second gold medal of the meet so far after his 400 IM win last night.

Kyler Van Swol (1:45.35) and Purdue’s Guillermo Blanco (1:45.53) put on a show battling for second and third.

Purdue’s Daniel Conway (1:47.07), Minnesota’s Ben Bravence (1:47.98), Minnesota’s Andrew Hartbarger (1:48.38), Bobby Bollier (1:48.47) and Minnesota’s Nick Orf (1:48.65) also swam for the title.

Mission Viejo’s Grant Shoults turned on the jets in the B final with a 1:45.32 for the win.  Ryan Harty touched second in 1:47.06 with Bowen Anderson taking third in 1:47.65.

Brandon Hatanaka (1:48.50), Brendan Meyer (1:49.53), Jan Petric (1:49.75), Viktor Bjoerk (1:50.05) and Alex Cisneros (1:51.42) also turned in times in the B final.

Tucson Ford’s Margo Geer couldn’t quite find that extra in-season best gear of 21.73 from the 2013 Texas Invitational, but she still managed to be the only sub-22 of the day with a 21.94 for the win.

Karlee Bispo raced her way to second in 22.46, while Aquajets’ Zoe Avestruz wound up third overall in 22.48.

Southwest’s Beata Nelson, the new butterfly national age group queen, finished fourth in 22.51.

Minnesota’s Becca Weiland (22.56), Longhorns’ Lisa Boyce (22.59), Bulldogs’ Shannon Vreeland (22.66) and Denver’s Annie Ochitwa (22.74) closed out the championship field.

Mission Viejo’s Katie McLaughlin threw down a 22.82 to win the B final of the splash-and-dash.  Olympic gold medalist Rhi Jeffrey, now swimming for Phoenix Swimming, took second in 22.86 with Minnesota’s Blake Zeiger finishing third in 22.98.

Melissa Gates (23.04), Olivia Calegan (23.08), Megan Romano (23.11), Danielle Nack (23.16) and Heidi Busack (23.24) finished fourth through eighth in the consolation.

Nathan Adrian popped a sizzling time of 18.83 to take down the men’s 50-yard freestyle field tonight.  That’s not his fastest in-season time, as the 2013 Fastest Man in Texas drew an 18.79 from Adrian, but it was still plenty of speed for the win here in Minneapolis.

Sub 19s are somewhat regular here in Minnesota, considering that Fred Bousquet was the first man to ever break 19 during 2005 NCAAs here in Minneapolis with an 18.74.

Bruno Fratus (19.33) and Miguel Ortiz (19.42) took second and third behind Adrian tonight, while Danny Tucker placed fourth in 19.52.

Derek Toomey (19.65), James Disney-May (19.71), Mark Weber (19.75) and Marcelo Chierighini (19.80) all broke 20 seconds during the A final.

NYAC’s Darian Townsend turned in a 20.03 to top the B final by a healthy margin, while Grand Canyon’s Marcus Schlesinger placed second in 20.29.

AGUA’s En-wei Hu-Van Wright wound up third in 20.32 with Felipe Lima taking fourth in 20.39.

Connor Stirling (20.50), Mark McGlaughlin (20.51), Luke Pechmann (20.53) and Ian Gordon (20.78) placed fifth through eighth in the consolation.

Southwest’s Beata Nelson just missed her second 15-16 U.S. National Age Group record in as many days.  Just a day after racing to a sizzling 51.08 in the 100-yard fly, Nelson scorched the pool with a 51.67.

The 16-year-old just missed Rachel Bootsma’s record of 51.53 from 2010, but is definitely making herself into one of the recruits to watch in upcoming recruiting cycles.

Dominique Bouchard placed second in 52.33 with Aquajets’ Zoe Avestruz taking third with a 52.82 for her second bronze of the night.

Saint Petersburg’s Melanie Margalis (53.22), Megan Romano (53.39), Mickayla Hinkle (53.75), Annie Ochitwa (53.99) and Tevyn Waddell (54.92) also competed in the A finale.

Stanford’s Maya DiRado won the B final in 53.16 with Marie-Pier Couillard (54.00) and Hurricane’s Katie Hoff (54.47) taking second and third.

Santa Clara’s Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou (54.86), Regan Smith (55.04), Katelyn Holmquist (55.37), Mission Viejo’s Katie McLaughlin (55.60) and Brooke Zeiger (56.15) also had times in the consolation heat.

Club Wolverine’s Junya Koga nearly broke the top 10 all time in the 100-yard back with a blistering time of 44.86 for the win.

His teammate Miguel Ortiz, continued to do what you have to do to challenge for the overall points title and that is podium.  He earned his third medal with a silver-winning 45.94.

Badger’s James Wells wound up third overall in 46.19, while Ryan Harty snared fourth in 47.23.

Daryl Turner (47.62), En-wei Hu-Van Wright (47.80), Eric Ress (48.86) and Christopher Johnson (49.07) placed fifth through eighth overall.

Michael Andrew topped the B final in 48.67, while Austin Surhoff touched second in 49.11

Stephen Seliskar (49.12), Alex Toetz (49.34), Carl Newenhouse (49.42), Alex Walton (49.65), Cole Bateman (49.67) and Noah Busch (50.38) closed out the consolation field.

Gator’s Elizabeth Beisel, definitely looking to challenge the overall standings leaderboard this year as a full-time pro, picked up her fourth medal of the meet so far.

She clocked a 4:37.00 to win the finale, her second best ever.  Her lifetime best is a sizzling 4:34.54 at the 2012 Ohio State Invitational, but her second best had been a 4:37.74 at the 2011 Southeastern Conference Championships.

While last year’s Grand Prix had an event entry cap, which hampered people from going all out in a Katinka Hosszu-like FINA World Cup manner, this year’s edition allows some leeway for National Team and Junior National Team members. Also, international swimmers ranked in the top 50 in the world in an event, may enter any number of events that they wish.

This means you are going to see more loaded event schedules from people like Beisel who can handle it.

Minnesota’s Brooke Zeiger raced her way to second in 4:39.50 with Badger’s Lindsay Vrooman taking third in 4:40.13.

Bulldogs’ Shannon Vreeland (4:40.99), Minnesota’s Kiera Janzen (4:42.93), NBAC’s Becca Mann (4:42.93), Minnesota’s Sam Harding (4:46.44) and Minnesota’s Brooke Lorentzen (4:46.48) also turned in championship heat times.

Frisco’s Gabrielle Kopenski topped the B final with a 4:42.61, while Minnesota’s Jessica Plant took second in 4:44.65.  Santa Clara’s Sandra Soe snared third in 4:47.08.

Taylor Ault (4:47.28), Madeline Hoch (4:49.36), Ruby Martin (4:49.40), Anina Lund (4:54.40) and Emily Meckstroth (4:55.02) placed fourth through eighth.

Club Wolverine’s Connor Jaeger smoked the middle distance event with a time of 4:15.05, winning by more than three seconds as he had time to take off his cap and goggles to watch the rest of the race finish.

SwimMAC’s Tyler Clary, definitely more of an IMer in terms of distance events, still did what he wanted to do and that was medal with a second-place 4:18.45. That’s his fourth medal of the meet as he has built a big lead over Miguel Ortiz in the points race, 14-9.

NBAC’s Frank Dyer claimed third-place honors in 4:18.83 in the finale.

Wisconsin’s Michael Weiss (4:12.04), Mission Viejo’s Nick Norman (4:22.33), Minnesota’s CJ Smith (4:24.07), Badger’s Ryan Feeley (4:24.10) and Jeremy Bagshaw (4:24.91) also competed in the A final.

Santa Clara’s Aidan Burns took the B final in 4:23.04, while Michael Nunan claimed second in 4:24.25.

Ben Bravence (4:26.13), Bowen Anderson (4:28.78), Eric Ress (4:29.66), John Thomas Larson (4:29.72), Nathan Hopkins (4:29.96) and Logan Redondo (4:30.21) finished third through eighth in the consolation.

Minnesota’s Kierra Smith smashed her lifetime best of 2:06.43 from the Grand Prix last year with a sterling time of 2:05.12 this evening.  That moved her to sixth all time in the event’s history.

That’s a pretty stacked list to be part of now for Smith as she continues the long tradition of amazing 200-yard breaststrokers in Minnesota.

Saint Petersburg’s Melanie Margalis took second tonight in 2:07.97 with California’s Caitlin Leverenz, the fourth-fastest ever, took third in 2:07.99.

Gator’s Hilda Luthersdottir (2:09.69), Badger’s Bronwyn Pasloski (2:10.43), Minnesota’s Haley Spencer (2:10.54), T2’s Justine Bowker (2:14.39) and Badger’s Emily McClellan (2:14.67) also competed in the finale.

Golden West 15-year-old Nora Deleske topped the B final in 2:14.68 with AGUA’s Anna Belousova touching just behind in 2:15.02.  Frisco’s Destiny Nelson also wasn’t far behind with a 2:15.22.

Rachel Cunningham (2:15.89), Madison Preiss (2:16.21), Olivia Anderson (2:17.11), Jenny Ma (2:17.34) and Madeleine Vonderhaar (2:18.31) took fourth through eighth.

Men’s 200 breast

BJ Johnson, a veteran of the Arena Grand Prix series, took the top time in the 200 breast with a 1:53.80, while Marat Almatdinov placed second in 1:54.46.

NBAC’s Conor Dwyer took his third medal of the meet with a third-place time of 1:54.51.

Lyam Dias (1:55.22), Carlos Almeida (1:55.23), Mike Alexandrov (1:55.95), Matt Anderson (1:57.40) and Trevor Hoyt (1:58.57) placed fourth through eighth tonight.

John Bushman won the B final in 1:56.22 with Minnesota’s Conner McHugh claiming second in 1:57.33.

NBAC’s Alpkan Ornek (1:59.01) also cleared 2:00 in the B final.

Jakub Maly (2:00.07), Phillip Willett (2:00.60), Corey Lau (2:01.22), Nick Hatanaka (2:01.47) and Christian Bals (2:02.48) comprised the rest of the consolation field.

Santa Clara’s Sarah Shimomura, Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou, Sandra Soe and Cathy Teng took second in 7:26.46, while Texas Ford’s Destiny Nelson, Camryn Toney, Rachel Ramey and Gabrielle Kopenski placed third in 7:29.01.
