LAUSANNE, Switzerland, December 18. ITALY consolidated its lead of Group B in the European preliminaries of the FINA Women’s Water Polo World League 2014, after the second round of matches, played on December 17, 2013. In the other match of the day, Great Britain started the competition with a loss against Russia.
In Catania, Sicily, the Italians defeated Hungary by 9-7, thanks to a very successful first quarter, where the local team imposed a 7-3 lead that would prove decisive for the remaining of the match. Roberta Bianconi was the most prolific scorer for the winning squad, netting four goals. In the first round of this World League, the Italians had already obtained a precious triumph in Athens, beating the Hellenic squad by 12-9.
In Manchester, the host team of Great Britain naturally hoped for a good start of the competition, but an inspired Russian squad took control of the game, winning by 12-9. It was a fairly balanced game until the end of the third quarter (8-7 for the visiting team), but a final effort (4-2) from Russia (defeated in the inaugural round by Spain, at home) dictated the outcome of the match.
GROUP A: 1. Spain, 3 pts (1 win); 2. Russia, 3 pts (1W, 1 loss); 3. Great Britain, 0 pts (1L)
GROUP B: 1. Italy, 6 pts (2W); 2. Hungary, 0 pts (1L); 3. Greece, 0 pts (1L)
The four other rounds for the European groups of the FINA Women’s Water Polo World League 2014 are scheduled on January 21, February 18, March 18 and April 22, 2014. Preliminary rounds will also be held in 2014 in Africa, the Americas and Asia/Oceania (locations and dates will be announced at a later stage).
Beijing (CHN) will host the Women’s Super Final from June 10-15, 2014.
