Industry News: USA Swimming’s Chuck Wielgus Wins Cancer Awareness Award

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana, June 8. THE Great Comebacks Program has just named Chuck Wielgus, Executive Director of USA Swimming, its National Award Winner at a ceremony held at the Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurses (WOCN) 43rd Annual Conference in New Orleans. Wielgus of Colorado Springs, CO, is being honored for his work in raising awareness and in helping others who need ostomy surgery.

Wielgus has remained a dynamic force in U.S. swimming since he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and went on to have ostomy surgery. After his surgery, he went on to lead the US team at the Beijing Games in 2008. He is also Chief Executive Officer of the USA Swimming Foundation.

"Great Comebacks is proud to recognize Chuck for his strength of heart and mind, and for helping us change misperceptions and build greater awareness of living life with an ostomy," said Rolf Benirschke, Founder and Chairman, Great Comebacks Program.

Great Comebacks also presented its Tony Snow Public Service Award to LTC (R) Justin F. Blum, who is an instructor of JROTC programs and commands the South Carolina State Guard for Homeland Security.
