Hoff Squashes Meet Record in 400 IM for Second Gold

VICTORIA, British Columbia, Aug. 18. KATIE Hoff secured her second gold medal of the meet with a conquest of the 400-meter IM in meet-record fashion at the 2006 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships on Friday.

After claiming the 200-meter freestyle title during day one, Hoff came back with a 4:36.82 in the 400 IM. The performance broke the 13-year-old record of 4:39.25 previously held by the United States’ Kristine Quance.

"I have definitely been trying to have a good back half and take it out a little easier," Hoff said. "I think we really have come together well as a team and have had some fast swimming out there."

Meanwhile, Ariana Kukors made it a sweep of the top-two spots for the Americans with a 4:39.68 for silver, while Australian Stephanie Rice turned in a bronze-winning 4:41.83.

With the two-medal haul, the U.S. increased its medal tally to 16 (10G, 6S) to pace the field, while Japan stayed in second with nine (1G, 2S, 6B). The Australians, however, continued to mount a comeback with a third-place total of eight (1G, 2S, 5B).
